The Exarch sat in his private study tending to a quiet smoke and session of thought. He was reading through a particularly old text entitled The Wrath of Gods. Not satisfied with the limited information he had found, Elias leaned back in his chair and began to speak his thoughts aloud.

"A curse from the god Bhaal....or his followers... powerful magic not easily overcome by a host, let alone an old man and a few peers."

A plume of smoke arose from the mage's nose as he sighed deeply.

As the Exarch sat, silently smoking for some time, the hearth's fire danced about casting it's orange hue to every corner of the study. He stared at his desktop, littered with scrolls, some letters, and some containing various spells. A few miscellaneous items cluttered the desk as well, at this very moment one such item stood out among the others.

With one hand on his pipe, Elias reached for the perfectly round, flawlessly smooth gem that sat upon it's small stand. He laid his pipe upon the desk and turned the immense pearl over in his hands. A flicker of light gleamed in the old mage's eye and he began to grin. One last time before leaving his study he spoke seemingly to himself.

"What do you think my Lady of the Weave? Perhaps there is hope for our friend yet!"

Oi, This is Ole Mits 'ere.

I ran inta one o'your fancy Maiden's O' Magic th'other day, roit. Offered t'keep 'er company an' admittedly some other not-so-gentlemenylike offers which she graciously refused. That bein 'sides the point, she said you long-bearded fellas are always seekin men o'all trades includin talented gents such as m'self. Well, I figure I ain't got no real employ at th'time bein an' maybe I'd lend you fellas a 'and!

I am not one o'those scroll-readin types, a'least for the mos' part. I'll say tha' outroit. Also, I may of 'ad my fingers caught in cookie jar a few times in th'past but I ain't never 'armed no one.

Anywho, I'm seekin work if y'got it. Good with disarmin traps, snoopin, and excellent with the ladies. I don't take part in pe'ey thievery, though I 'ave been known t'borrow things for prolonged periods 'o time.

'Opefully you old coots go' some work for me an' 'opefully I can earn a bit o'coin doin it.

Thanks for y'time an' 'ave a good noite now.
~Mits Daygerford~

P.S. I forget the lass's name, but I know she was addicted t'shoppin. Put in a good word for me, egh!?

P.P.S. I woulda interviewed in person, but the lass warned me o'some big uglies you fellas keep jus' inside the doors. I ain't one to wander around golems an' catch em unawares. End up with a smooshed hin or a'the least some soiled trousers. Not quite a fan of neither, mate.

Bang, bang, bang!

Bang, bang, bang!

It is just after midnight outside the Istari Tower, and there is heavy pounding at the door. When the door is finally opened, a grim-faced mercenary in the uniform of the Flaming Fist extends a letter to whoever answers. His instructions are terse and to the point: the letter is to be delivered to one of the Exarchs immediately.

Once the missive changes hands, the Flaming Fist turns on a heel and walks off into the darkness. First his body disappears, then the glow of his lantern, and then he is entirely gone.

Whether one of the Exarchs is awoken immediately, is awake already, or waits until morning to read the letter makes little difference. Once one of them does get around to it, however, the letter reads as follows:

Exarchs Elias Goodmane, Erukus Deathrune:

Rather troubling news has been brought to Duke Eltan's attention, regarding the Weave Masters and their recent actions against the Flaming Fist and the Council of Four. It seems that one of your men -- a "Thomas Shepard" -- thought it was within his powers to arrest an officer of the Flaming Fist.

I do not think I need to remind you that so long as the Weave Masters enjoy the protection of Baldur's Gate -- a protection largely afforded to your organization by the City Watch and the Flaming Fist -- then they are in no position to challenge the authority of the Council of Four.

Duke Eltan considers the Weave Masters allies -- in spite of incidents such as the Thayan affair -- and recognizes the special position of your organization within the city. As such, he will let this insult go, provided the Weave Masters issue a public apology for their actions. We also expect that your Thomas Shepard apologize to Lieutenant Myhun Kren, the man he illegally detained, in person or by missive.

Duke Eltan is sure that you will understand the seriousness of this matter, and looks forward to your reply.

*tuk was somewhat quick to open doors to the flaming fist as he was sleeping in the entrance halls beacuse of the key he lost for the bedchambers. He was in his loose-fitting garment consisting of trousers and a shirt for sleeping when he recieved the letter from the Flaming fist. As he was now fully awake from the loud door banging, he reads a letter out loud enough to be heard by himself. As he finishes, he lets out a short chuckle *

Startled, he pulls out a dagger and peaks around the corner, only to discover a Fist is knocking at the chamber doors. As Elias sat, enjoying his customary breakfast at the Elfsong Tavern, he seemed to be in a rather jovial mood. He spoke with Lilly in between bites of eggs and sips from his tall glass of milk.

Following his morning routine he took the time in his corner booth to read the correspondence delivered to Istari the night before. The mage was saving the letter delivered by the Fist for last of course, seeing as how it would require special attention. As he scanned the letter's contents he only shook his head and handed the letter to his companion.

"Well my dear, this is not quite the attention I wanted, but it will have to do I suppose. Naturally we will respond, but not until our plates are empty!"

And with that the Exarch and Elite Magus finished their breakfast, and strolled casually back to Istari Tower.

*Jonas Rokranon kneels next to Initiate Dajala's bed in the Sanctuary of Ilmater. As he cares for her, wiping away the vile black blood and getting her to drink fluids, he takes the time in between to write a letter to Exarch Elias. He requests that the Ilmateri summon a squire from his Church in order to deliver the letter to Istari tower.*

Thelia sat in solice in the Temple of Tyr, prepping for the Mayhap second encounter with her ex-mentor. Given the strength of her friends to guide her, she was greatful beyond words they were so supportive. She silently wondered of the elf Faerynn however, her eyes filled with concern.

"The Dark One.... and The Black One..., perhaps there is a connection?"

A gloom of thought traveled in her mind and a shiver down her spine, she dreaded to think dark alliances were being born against the forces of light. The last thing the city needed was a "real" threat.

She prayed to Tyr once again, for hopes that like the day he told her to fight, he would guide her once again through this dark time, and give her the strength to battle the forces of evil once more.

She thanked her new found friends for their kindness, and donated coin to the altar for finding people who she hoped, understood her unquestioning intentions for goodness and morals.

She would never become as her kind... Thanks to them, she would fight on, with all her heart.

A letter arrives at the Istari Tower, from Candlekeep. It bears a blue wax seal of a keep, with tongues of flame over the keep's towers, and is addressed to the exarchs.

The letter reads as follows:

Exarchs Elias Goodmane and Erukus Deathrune:

The Guide of Candlekeep, Nurgle Thandule, has informed us that one of your organization's adherents threatened his life this evening, after seeing the Guide in the company of a demon. The Guide believes he heard your man's companions refer to him as "Andy." It should be noted that the Guide did not summon this demon.

We do hope that the Weave Masters will not make a habit of threatening our scholars. We have considered your organization a friend in the past.

The Guide, Nurgle, has been warned to stay away from demons in his future dealings, but it is our belief that threatening his life was entirely unnecessary and completely uncalled for: As such, we expect a written apology, from "Andy" to Nurgle.

We take threats against our people very seriously.

Sincerely,
Ulraunt
Keeper of Tomes
Leader of Candlekeep

The handwriting is full of extravagant flourish and both the paper and the penmanship is of the highest quality. It is clear -- if not from the pluralis maiestatis, or royal "we," then from the tone and the impeccable lettering -- that Candlekeep's leader thinks very highly of himself.

*A bat arrives at the door of the Istari Tower dropping a letter on the steps.*

Dear Exarch Deathrunes,

I have to say that I am appalled that once again I am harassed by your soldiers. As I have been trying to enter the N.T.E and knowing you are a member there as well. I would like to know why I am constantly harassed. It was my understanding when I last spoke to you and answered all the questions of Arkaine the Paladin and was not found to be a danger or a summoner of demons that the matter would be closed.
Now I would say that you frivolous soldiers and their threats against me because of my blood are ridiculous and hardly productive or profitable.
I spared his pathetic life as I have no reason to wish violence, however this continual assault must be stopped.
As I accompanied Nurgle the Guide of Candlekeep to see if I could find a tome that he was interested in, all full well knowing of my blood. Your soldier his name being called Andy, and an associate that look little more than an assassin, decided that it would be best to act in a malicious way threatening not only I, but asking me to leave; as I did his associate punched the guide and your man, Andy made threats against the Guides life.
Pardon if I say so, but threatening a guide and as well myself seems hardly the image I would think you would want of your members. I am noticing more and more of your people are becoming little more than thugs and not the protectors that your group claims that they are.
Please be advised that if further harassment comes from this Andy or any of the Weavemasters I will be left with little choice but to react. I do not wish for it to come to violence but I am finding the dual standards to be a bit much. You are friend to a Tiefling Guide, yet I am constantly interrogated, because of my blood. I will not be so accepting of the harassment in the future so I ask, that you inform your soldiers that unless they have a reason more than my blood to cast threats, that they choose to leave me be. I prefer this not escalate further.

Slithering tentacles caress the Exarch's desk as he reads his latest correspondences. Horrible slurping and gargling sounds emnate from the mage as he stares at his quill.

"There will be no answers today."

Jonas is seen traveling to and from the Gullykin wizard tower almost daily. Often he has some scroll or tome in his hand as he enters that he does not take with him when the paladin leaves.
