I'd treat this as valid excuse, actually, if it is applied to me.
People can hear rumors, tales and legends.
So they CAN recognize on rare occasions spells being cast even though they know very little about magic. They can start asking questions. And you can fool them with your awesome bluff skill.
Also, spellcraft DC is quite fair.
Eldricth doom has equivalent spell level 8. Spellcraft check is 15 + spell level. It won't ever succeed on 1 skillpoint.
Now, only a mage would know full details about warlocks, their invocations and source of power, but anybody else could scream "wiiiitch!" and run away in terror, or start a confrontation.
