Have you explicitly targeted yourself before trying to cast?

That does the trick, thxs.
Why does it not work like any other spell?

Because it's cast via a custom GUI that doesn't quite play by the usual rules.

I know that this is a year old topic, but I would like to point out that the Improved Familiar abilities (atleast eyeball and bonebat) doesn't match the WIKI article at all:
  • Bonebat doesn't even seem to be able to attack enemies, so cant paralyze them either, like it should be able to according to WIKI
I would like to know that, have the design idea changed that dramatically in the past year or is it still a work in progress or what?

I think a lot of the SLAs (if not all of them) ran into some technical complications, though I don't think they were scrapped outright so much as deprioritized. There's been a lot on Rhi's plate over the past year, and nobody else stepped up to fix this.

Not sure what's up with the Bonebat, though. Does it literally not have a weapon? I know it's not easy to command familiars to attack in NWN2, but that's not specific to the Bonebat.

The issue with special abilities is that the game doesn't give any means for a player to use them when possessing a creature, and familiar AI won't attack so it'll never use it on its own. I want to come back to these and fix that at some time, but unfortunately it's low priority.

To attack with a familiar (that is, basic autoattacking), you need to turn off companion AI (click the AI button next to the menu 'eye' on the bottom left of the screen), possess your familiar, right click on a mob, and select attack. Then you can swap back to your main and the familiar will keep attacking. Due to the AI, this is the only way to make a familiar attack at this time (though I'd like to change the AI at some point).

Hey All,

I posted about this a while back (how time flies!) and thought I'd try and shed some light on it with the spirit of this thread.

The gist is, possibly allowing bards access to "Obtain Familiar" as in the 3.5 rulesets?

Thanks! 🙏

When someone mentioned in the GIB thread that there would be restrictions, I thought something could have be done to limit this. PTWF is not the only problem though. This PRC can result with one hander builds that have 62AC and 35+ damage. The power creep has been insane the past couple of years
What one hander build are you thinking of that could achieve this?

Fighter/CoC/Duelist, perhaps? Favoring DEX and probably not taking enough INT to justify Combat Insight. You'd get up to 10 points from Elegant Strike, 2d6 from Deadly Defense on a rapier, another d6 from Precise Strike, a combined total of 8 from Piercing Mastery and Epic Rapier Specialization, plus whatever your STR modifier is. I'd probably mix in a 3-level Shadowdancer dip for F12/CoC10/D5/SD3, unlocking Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, and Expose Weakness... and unless you find thistledown armor or have a really lousy INT score, you'll want to ignore Superior Defense and just fight in cloth. (Even if you do, you may want to take the Armor Optimization feats!)

Assuming a Greater Rapier of Shielding, that's 27-43 damage per hit, possibly a little more depending on your STR, plus EW ticks up to 20 per round. You'll need good items or lots of UMD to put your AC into the 60s, but I think it's doable... and with your emphasis on DEX over INT, you'll get far better accuracy than my Wiz/Swash/Duelist/EK with all of the damage and pretty much all of the AC. Might actually justify not running Sembian+Parry all the time like she does.
