The Baldur's Gate Gazette: Submission Guidelines

-Articles should be written from a neutral, third-party perspective. Writers should avoid the usage of "I" "we" and "our" when describing an event - even if they were personally involved in it.

-Articles should be written as well as possible to reduce the workload of the editor. Please proofread work before submitting it.

-Any subject matter is permissible as long as it is newsworthy, informative, educational, or entertaining. Exception: smut / lascivious content will not be accepted. The Gazette is intended to be read by both adventurers and farmers and their families.

-Opinion pieces are welcomed and encouraged. However, to ensure the objectivity of the Gazette, all articles that contain personal opinions instead of factual information will be clearly marked. The Gazette will not publish opinion pieces speaking in favor of any activities that have been deemed illegal or inappropriate by the officials of Baldur's Gate.

-Articles should be written in the Common tongue. Other languages can be included, but translations must be provided. Any translation in a language unknown to the editor will be verified for accuracy prior to publication.

-In order to have a chance at inclusion in the upcoming edition, all submissions are due no later than the evening before the date of publication. The Gazette will publish once every other (( RL )) week on (( Friday )), so this means articles are needed by (( Thursday - 10:00 p.m. Central time )). Publication dates are subject to change at the editor's discretion.

-The editor reserves the right to modify articles as she deems fit. If there is a particular portion of an article that the writer does not want changed, he or she should let the editor know as soon as possible.

-Plagiarism will not be tolerated. The editor expects all work published in the Gazette to be original. Writers are expected to give credit to any sources they may use in their submissions. Anyone discovered to be plagiarizing will be publicly discredited and barred from writing for the newspaper, and any reward points accumulated will be stripped.

-Reward points are awarded for published articles. Articles that are not published in the edition for which they were submitted may be included at a later date. If the editor cannot use an article, she will return it to its writer.

-Publication of any material is at the sole discretion of the editor.

The Baldur's Gate Gazette Item Rewards Program

The officials of Baldur’s Gate, in conjuction with Vhaire Industries of Saerloon, Sembia, are pleased to announce that contributors to The Baldur’s Gate Gazette are now eligible to receive exotic, imported items that are not normally available for sale or trade in the area.

Article contributions, whether they are news, leisure, educational, or advertisements, will earn their writer a certain amount of points. Points earned can then be redeemed for a variety of items including custom tailored clothing and armor. Unique items such as gnomish spectacles are also available. As interest in items and contributions to the Gazette increase, the available items for which points are redeemed will expand.

News Articles

What qualifies as a news article? A news article is an article that is written about any current IC happenings that are different from everyday life. Examples: any event where a DM is involved; major altercations or interactions between factions.

325 words or greater: 4 points
225 words: 3 points
125 words, minimum: 2 points

Important note: points are awarded based upon the published version of the article. Any attempts to make the editor's life harder by filling articles with superfluous words will result in no points awarded and a very irritated editor! Please adhere to the regular guidelines for articles (( see previous post )).

Leisure / Educational Articles

What qualifies as a leisure / educational article? Any article that tells about area lore or past events qualifies as a leisure / educational article. Examples: a guide to the Cloudpeak Mountains or an article about the latest fashion trends in the Western Heartlands.

Opinion pieces, as long as they abide by the regular guidelines, are included in this category. Original artwork falls into this category as well, but it is excluded for the words requirement.

200 words, minimum: 2 points

Organization / Event Advertisements

What qualifies as a organization / event advertisement? If any new or existing groups want to spread the word about themselves, then they are encouraged to submit an advertisement. Special events, such as a public meeting, debate, or performance also constitute an advertisement.

100 words, minimum: 1 point

Important note: once an organization has been advertised, it cannot be advertised again for six (( RL )) weeks. Recurring events (such as a weekly meeting) can be advertised, but they will only receive credit once every six (( RL )) weeks.

Shared Credit / Split Credit

Not everyone is a writer, but even non-writers can earn credit! Characters who want to share news IC with Selis Vhaire (or any other writers) will receive shared credit with whomever writes the article. In order to receive credit, the character has to make it known that he or she wants an article written for the Gazette.

Many writers enjoy writing news from a first-person perspective, but this perspective constitutes an "opinion" piece. Lengthy news / opinion pieces will be awarded a points total equal to the points between them. For example: a news article that would normally earn four points for its length is written in an opinion piece style, which is only worth two points. The amount of credit received for this piece would be three points.

The Baldur's Gate Gazette Item Rewards Program

Available Items
The system is easy: all items right now cost either twenty or thirty points.

Twenty Points

Earning and spending twenty points allows a player to get ONE custom-designed SIMPLE item. Headgear, boots, cloaks, gloves, and clothes all fall into this category.

In order to receive this custom item with any special properties, a player must relinquish an similar item with those same properties. For example: if a player wants to spend his or her points on a pair of glasses that have STR +2 on them, then he or she would have to relinquish a headgear item that has STR +2 on it. This is to facilitate having an item "custom tailored" IC.

Any existing model is available to be customized. Unique appearances such as GLASSES as well as a TINTABLE RED WIZARD ROBE are also available. There is the possibility for more items to be added; if a player wants something specific, please PM me and ask. I will then contact the BG Staff and see if the request can be added. Please keep requests reasonable; Selis will not import skimpy clothing - and the staff will not add those haks.

Thirty Points

Earning and spending thirty points allows a player to get ONE custom-designed COMPLEX item. A suit of armor and all its regalia falls into this category.

Questions and Answers

I am good with Toolset. Can I design the item myself?

Yes! If a player wishes to design his or her own item using the existing items available on BG, then by all means design it! Either PM me the link to where the .erf is located or send me an email with it: [email protected]
Once I have the design, I will get it to the staff.

Who is the DM for this project? Can I pester him or her with questions?

DM Hydrocarbonated is the DM in charge of the Gazette Rewards Progam. Pester him at your own risk (which is to say do not pester him at all!) It is easier for everyone involved if folks come to me with questions instead of burdening the already-burdened staff.

A man walks into the abandoned office and strikes a light. He mutters imprecations as he sees the layers of dust all over the place.

"This will not do. No no no." He turns around and strides off to hire some help to clean up the office.

For this enterprising man is re-opening the venerated publication known to one and all as:

The Baldur's Gate Gazette
