Adrian Flame - Purpose

Unread post by GeneFreed »

Adrian was never really good at anything, however in his defense, he was more of a late bloomer. Raised in Port Llast, his true potential was never met with the menial labour they had for him. They required a blacksmith, a hunter, a tanner, maybe merchants but not a lay about. Suffice to say, it didn't stop him from busying his time within farming households, or even blacksmithing apprenticeships, which didn't last long. It was age, that brought him his gift, secrets unlocked, power revealed, the truth made clear to others, Adrian was ill-prepared to comprehend what was happening to him, waking up with such uncontrolled magic was a mystery, and even the village sage wasn't too versed in such ways. Although due to the schemes of the village sage, Adrian found himself on the first caravan to the city of Neverwinter, with a budding career in controlling the weave. However, Master Uldran never prepared him for the hardships that he would face in the care of the instructors.

Neverwinter was marvelous, a sight to behold, Adrian had never traveled so far from home, and to think his parent's would been able to raise the coin to get him out of the small village, much to his chagrin. They were almost in a rush to get rid of him, he could notice the distrust in their eyes, perhaps his newfound power was a curse, and they didn't trust him, but he was quick to shake the thoughts away, he didn't wish anything to distract him from his current path in his life, although at this time he was only seventeen. Beautiful, cascading rivers that flowed into the harbor, the famous gardens that Adrian's Master had always told him about and they all paled in comparison to the Academy, the prospect of learning about his otherworldly talents, the history of how he was able to cast spells without the need of a spellbook, the knowledge behind his whole existence, it was fascinating to say the least. However Adrian was in for a rude awakening.

Young, inexperienced, naive, foolish, arrogant. Adrian was labeled with these titles time and time again as he progressed through life. Mind you, what is the purpose of handing unbridled magical power to a young adult who has little idea what to do with it, many thought there was none.
Hells if Adrian himself had any clue, he just waded through the thick, nauseating ridicules that his peers threw at him, 'freak', was the most popular term. The instructors wouldn't listen to someone who couldn't control their power, let alone believe if the assault on one of the students held any incentive. Anger was the fuel of his more destructive spells, like they could even be called that, to just know how to cast magical missiles?
The whole situation begged for an explanation, and Adrian was left shrouded in the dark for years, the able-bodied students who could actually control their power were more of a priority, but you couldn't blame the instructors, what use were you when you were unable to master the one thing that gave you such power over the others. Disappointment? It had to be, they were afraid of what Adrian could become, they didn't wish to waste such effort on a potential lost cause, but that didn't sit well with our hot-headed sorcerer.
He was sure they thought he was drunk with power, of course, he was a sorcerer, they didn't need to prepare spells, nor purchase large spellbooks to record their walls of magical text, or document their components required for such spells.
No. It was all from within, Adrian needed to believe he had a purpose, otherwise it would all be made redundant, setting out on his own, forging a path ahead.
