Their mother had been consort to a noble samaurai warrior in Kara-tur. At the age of five, their father was called to war and their mother returned to the geisha house where she had originally trained. Times became harder when more of the higher class, wealthy warriors and noblemen of the area also left to fight.

The geisha house fell on hard times and the owner no longer would support the upkeep of the daughters. Their mother had to make a hard choice, but it was a question of survival and she let them go with an old friend, a travelling monk to bring them up. He took them west to Calimshan, settled there as 'sensei' in a monastery and together with his Kara-tur lady raised the girls there as if they were his daughters.

At the age of eighteen, Jasmyn and Yasmyn Teng left the region and found their way to Baldurs Gate.
