Background:
Charraj's parents were well-to-do merchants from Calimshan who moved to Neverwinter to start their family. From birth, Charraj enjoyed a relatively privileged life. He had a fine horse, fine clothes, and fine food. He socialized in the affluent circles of Neverwinter, establishing good contacts in the city. Charraj was also involved with a girl from another well-to-do family in Neverwinter.
Most importantly, his parents hired only the best tutors, scholars, and combat instructors to educate him. He learned his lessons enthusiastically and became well-versed in many subjects, languages, and weapons. He even learned the fundamentals of magic, although he would not utilize them until much later in his life.
When Charraj turned eighteen, he decided against joining the family business. This was derided by his friends as a stupid decision, and he and his Calimshan girlfriend eventually broke up. Moving out of his bitterly disappointed parents' home, he tried to make his living by working for the poor. He hoped to improve the lives of those less fortunate than he in Neverwinter. He quickly discovered, however, that the poor had no money with which to pay him.
He switched tacts and hired himself out as a tutor. A few families of moderate means came to him, and he taught their children as best he could. In this way, he was able to eke out a living for a year.
One day, a paladin came to Charraj's door with a thin and dirty boy in tow. The paladin introduced himself as Aston Keir. The boy was Elias Kohler, a homeless twelve year-old youth. Aston had caught Elias in his home trying to steal from his servant. Unwilling to return Elias to the streets, the paladin had decided that he would pay Charraj to shelter and educate the boy. The money was good enough so that Charraj agreed.
Over the next several months, Elias proved to be as adept a pupil as Charraj had been in his own youth. The boy was eager and learned quickly. On the weekends, Elias would leave to visit his friends on the streets and share with them food and his new-found knowledge. He would always return to Charraj after a couple of days.
But one day he didn't. Charraj waited a few days for Elias to show up. When that didn't happen, Charraj set out to look for his student.
Charraj asked Elias' friends, he looked into rumors, he staked out locations and watched and listened. He discovered eventually that some slavers had been kidnapping homeless youths off of the streets and selling them into slavery. But when Charraj went to the authorities with this information, he found no help. Even his friends and contacts expressed apathy when Charraj spoke to them.
Outraged, he turned to Aston. Upon hearing what Charraj had discovered, the paladin immediately took up arms and joined the teacher-turned-investigator in his street-side crusade. The two of them raided the slavers' base one night and dispatched all but one man, whom they dragged before the authorities and forced to confess.
For all of Charraj's efforts, however, Elias was still missing. The boy had already been shipped out of Neverwinter by the slavers before they were destroyed.
Afterwards, Charraj gave up teaching and turned to investigative work. Over the next two years, he exposed underground plots, jailed those who would prey upon the poor, and established a small reputation as a skilled investigator.
At twenty-three, Charraj set out with Aston to try to find Elias. Incidentally, this broke up his second romantic relationship.
Elias would turn up later, a changed person.
Goals:
Stay alive.
Find out who's trying to kill him, and why.
Protect the Weave.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Charraj is modest when it comes to the arcane. "I envy you. I've never had much formal training, so I hesitate to call myself a true wizard."
Prefers to avoid conflict. ". . . I'm going to skip the rush."
Charraj's favorite drink is elven wine.
His weaknesses have always been paranoia and excessive speculation. Recent events have done nothing to remedy this.
Charraj has two wealthy parents living in Neverwinter with whom he has not spoken in years.
