Background: Sutek's birth was considered a bad omen. No one had ever seen a black baby gnome. It was quickly decided this one had to go. The gnome shaman took the black baby and threw it over a cliff, thereby ridding the clan of an evil omen. But by some miracle, the small black bungle did not die. Watching this horrid event unfold was a witch named Sostris. Seeing an opportunity, she retrieved the injured creature and took it with her nursing it back to health. She named the child Sutek, a name meaning hell walker. The witch was a cruel care-giver though. She involved the young Sutek in cruel and painful rituals designed to toughen his will and resolve. When he became of age, Sostris offered the child up to her pact holder who immediately saw potential in the dark soul of this young gnome. Sutek was to become a warlock apprentice under Sostris. But the pact holder had other ideas. When Sutek reached 40 years, the time had come for the apprentice to become the master. The pact holder directed the young Sutek to kill Sostris. Knowing his power was nothing compared to her, he had to trick the witch. Eventually, it came to him. Sutek begged the witch to take him to the spot where he was sentenced to death. Tired of the gnome's nagging, the witch relented and took him to the cliff side where 40 years earlier he was sentenced to death. Taking the opportunity he pushed the unsuspecting witch over the cliff where she fell breaking her back...but still alive. He slowly made his way down the cliff side relishing in the witch's agony. Looking over the broken body of the one who saved his life, he now contemplated her end. Seething with hatred for all the years of torment Sutek addresses the helpless witch, “Nothing personal Sostris...your time is over...my time is here.” And with that he dispatched the stunned Sostris with a single blast.
