Background:
The Kozakuran sorceress Celeste was homeward bound when bandits ambushed her in the Inner Sea region. Her entire entourage was slain before the earthsoul Gossan happened by the scene and rescued her. After the fight was won, Gossan escorted Celeste through the Inner Sea to protect her from further harm.
What began as a chance encounter between the two eventually grew into a consummated romance as they traveled together. Knowing her family would never accept a planetouched husband, however, Celeste ended their relationship when they finally found a boat to take her back to Kozakura. She left Gossan behind and returned to her homeland.
When Celeste gave birth to Cairn in her family home, her shame was plain for her parents to see. The baby had black stone-like skin, and his eyes were pits of darkness. The family of sorcerers sequestered Cairn in their home and never let the public see the abomination that their daughter had birthed. Once Cairn began to exhibit the magical talents that flowed so strongly in his mother's family, however, no one could keep Celeste from encouraging her son's gift. Cairn grew into his early twenties under his mother's arcane guidance.
Rumor eventually spread of the monster child that was being raised by Celeste's family. When Cairn inadvertently burned down his home and several others with an errant Flame Arrow, a mob formed to kill Cairn and his sorcerous family. Cairn managed to escape from the mob with Celeste's help. Before he left, Celeste gave Cairn the family's enchanted katanas, lest the mob loot them. Celeste herself, and the rest of the family, were not so fortunate as to escape the rioting townsfolk.
Cairn eventually found his father in the Inner Sea region. There, Cairn discovered what his mother had never told him about his father: Gossan was a paladin of Hoar. When Cairn told Gossan of Celeste's death, Gossan took his son and set off immediately for Kozakura to seek revenge.
When they finally reached Cairn's hometown, Cairn realized that Gossan meant to kill everyone in the mob that had taken Celeste's life. Cairn refused to help his father. Gossan preached the dogma of Hoar to Cairn, tried to make his son see that the failure to respond to an attack would only invite further attacks. Cairn would not be convinced.
It was then that a patrolman happened across the two genasi arguing on the outskirts of the town. Despite Cairn's calls for peace, the patrolman raised the alarm.
Within the hour, Gossan died fighting the same mob that had killed Celeste.
It was then that Hoar came to Cairn and called for the young earthsoul to take revenge for the death of both of his parents. In a holy rage, Cairn drew one of his family's katanas and loosed his magic upon the mob. The townsfolk scattered and ran, fleeing from the stone sorcerer whose raging fires promised divine retribution.
Cairn spent the next two decades tracking down as many members of the mob as he could, driven by the dogma of Hoar as only a paladin can be. Only recently has he tracked down the last surviving member of the mob to the Sword Coast. The tired and terrified patrolman, the one who raised the alarm on Cairn and his father twenty years ago, died a swift, fiery, and ignominious death.
With the death of the last member of the mob, Cairn suddenly finds himself without a concrete direction, a stranger in a strange land.

Goals:
He no longer has any. Cairn is a lost man, one who has finally finished his decades-long quest and now finds himself adrift.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
-While he still follows the tenets of Hoar, Cairn no longer upholds the god's dogma with the same fiery determination that he possessed while he was tracking down his parents' killers. He is not sure if he has the right to call himself a paladin any longer.
-Cairn wears an amulet and a ring that his mother gave to him when he was very little. His mother impressed upon him the need to keep them on at all times, and he has never taken them off.
