Born to a lesser house in far-off Maerimydra, Jarr’ryl Mel’rae was a lesser son and promising student of the arcane.
A favored pupil of his previous master, the famed mage Dur’vrae Mel’rae, word of his inborn talents had quickly spread throughout the city. He was oft hated by his rivals for the ease in which he learned, and his magic seemed especially powerful.
Secret worshippers of Kiaransalee, House Mel’rae was known for their reliance on undead in battle. During one of these battles, an attack on rival House Olonrae, the hordes of undead that the attackers had brought with them suddenly shifted sides – destroying the bulk of House Mel’rae’s troops and leaving them exposed for retaliation. Only later did observers note that Dur’vrae had died just before the battle started – killed with a single dagger impaled into the base of his skull. His staff, as well as his right arm.. were missing.
It did not take long for House Olonrae to exact their revenge. House Mel’rae was put to the blade, all except for young Jarr’ryl. Spared for his talents, and adopted into the vanquishing house Olonrae, he took their name as custom dictates and became an under-mage to the house, which had always lacked in arcane power.
Many years passed, with Jarr’ryl developing his skills in both conjuration and necromancy, his secret worship of Kiaransalee ever present. In an attempt to secure his position in his new house he ‘befriended’ the lesser son Selds’eth and turned him to the worship of his goddess as well. He taught Selds’eth about anatomy, ways to use it to deflect damage, and at the same time embrace the accompanying pain as fuel for the hatred that kept them both alive on multiple occasions. They worshipped their Lady together, and in secret.
Eventually his mastery of the dead and his grasp on his arcane abilities began to trouble his new masters.. the House Mage and Consort, Vuz’ryn, in particular.
Within the house jealousy, greed, and envy often ruled the actions of the Matron Mother, Nhil’ala Olonrae. Longing, thirsting, for ever-greater power she was at times easily manipulated, especially when she was told greater power awaited her. So when Vuz’ryn came to her with news of recent divinations that saw her enriched.. divinations that saw her drenched in the blood of her rivals.. she could not sit idly. She eagerly embraced what Vuz’ryn told her must be done.
Jarr’ryl was chosen. Because of his non-blood affiliation, because of his growing threat to his new arcane master, or because of another reason.. he did not know. But he was called to Nhil’ala and commanded at once to take Selds’eth as his sword – and to venture to Sshamath. Act as envoy, determine the major players in the cities trade, and await further orders.. Jarr’ryl was not told what those ‘further orders’ might be.
///the staff and right arm of his previous master have made the journey to Sshamath as well. The arm is now a part of Jarr’ryl, having been grafted in a bizarre necromantic ritual in replacement of his own…
Goals: Do as he was bid – learn the lay of the land politically and physically in Sshamath and the surrounding environs. Ingratiate himself into the power structure of the city. And await further orders from his House. Personal goals underlying would be to gain as much arcane knowledge as he is able to gain, serve his lady Kiaransalee, and to free himself from the ties of his former life.
Possible Plot Hooks: Kiaransalee tie-ins, House Olonrae tie-ins, or House Mel’rae tie-ins
