Background: Verith was born to Tarik and Adrianna Skryle. Tarik and Adrianna tried for years to have a child with no luck. Tarik was a great and noble paladin who served Lathander blindly and who would not hesitate to answer and uphold the law of his Lord. One day a strange figure approached him offering to fix his problem and all he had to do was promise a favor to him later down the road. Verith’s father turned away the man not wanting to get involved in something that seemed dark.
Weeks later, Tarik heard his wife crying and praying for a child and after Tarik hearing this Tarik’s heart began to weigh hevily. Later that night as Tarik went to pray to Lathander for guidance and was approached again by this mysterious creature offering his assistance one more, reluctantly Tarik accepted his help, not letting his beloved wife know anything about the mysterious figure and his proposal. On the night Verith’s father accepted help, the being entered the home while they were asleep and place his hand upon Adrianna’s stomach causing a dark mist to begin swirling and surround her, after a few moments of this, dark energy began gathering and pouring into the home from the outside. As the mist gathered Tarik slept began to dream of this, tossing and turning not knowing of what is happening to his beloved and then the figure spoke, saying only one word “Verith” as he spoke this all the dark mist swirled into the palm of the beings hand, shooting directly into Adrianna waking Tarik, as Tarik woke he immediately reaches for his sword than the figure vanishes.
Nine months later a baby boy was born and was given the name Verith Skyrle, once Adrianna spoke his name for the first time Tarik began to receive dark visions of his family being slaughtered. The dreams started happening only once a year, but as the years go by the visions increased. 10 years passed and Tarik never did see the cloaked figure again. Until one night Tarik arose to some strange noises in his home, as he woke he began to feel this ripping feeling at his soul causing him to shake with fear. Tarik immediately rushed to his sons room to see the cloaked figure speaking with Verith, Tarik screams for his son to run away and stops speaking when he notices his sons eyes are coated completely with blackness. Verith’s father reaches for his sword by the door and as he reaches for it his child extends his palm out saying in a dark voice “ Know me and fear me. My embrace is for all and is patient be sure. The dead can always find you. My hand is everywhere – there is no door I cannot pass, nor guardian who can withstand me.” After hearing this Tarik falls to his knees trembling with fear and regret of what he had done, than he hears his wife’s voice saying “Verith… my son?” Tarik immediately turns around shouting for his wife to run bit it was too late a piercing black mist gathering around his son shoots directly into his beloved.
His wife’s body falls to the floor with her eyes completely empty with a single tear coming down. Tarik crawls over to his wife’s body cradling it saying softly “I am sorry my love…” as he looks up his son is now standing directly in front of him with pitch black eyes and a wide evil grin. His son begins to chant in a language that Tarik had never heard before, than Tarik began to feel his beloved moving in is arms once more, his eyes slowly move down and to his greatest fears his wife was now staring directly into his eyes with a blank and empty expression on her face. Tarik knew exactly what his beloved had become, as their eyes meet she lets out a dark scream causing the house to shake, he drops her body and rushes over to his sword. Grasping his sword in one hand he looks to his son still grinning at him with his piercing black eyes, Tarik lifts his sword up and as he thrusts down onto his son with all of his strength saying “forgive me” the sword stops in mid air an inch away from his sons neck. With confused eyes he notices that he is being held back by dark shadows and cannot seem to move at all, his son approaches slowly placing his hand on his father’s chest saying “The debit will now be paid” after speaking these words a red glow began to come off of Tarik’s chest with the symbol of Myrkul and with great horror of this sight, Tarik feels his soul being pulled from him and then darkness.
Tarik wakes hours later, rain pouring down heavily on his face, wondering how he got outside.. he hears voices surrounding him and lifts his head to see 2 dark figures and his son forming a triangle around him with a dark glow coming from underneath him. Tarik begins to try and move with all of his might, but he cannot budge than a voice speaks saying “It is time Verith, this servant of Lathander will be your first sacrifice to our master” Verith nods and begins to chant in a strange language once again. After a few moments the other two figures begin to chant with him causing the ground to shake and glow with such force that he feels as though his soul was being ripped from his body.
Then Tarik notices he can move and stands up, he looks down and see’s his body still lying there with a blank look on his face, then suddenly he feels the darkest presence that he has ever felt before. He lifts his eyes from his body to see a dark gate opening before him with the Lord of the Dead emerging out and then he hears from his son “He is yours my master” than Tarik’s spirit vanishes. Myrkul approaches Verith and simply nods at him than returns to whence he came. Verith spends the next years in solitude performing sacrifices for his master and then one night, a shadow approaches him telling him that Myrkul wants him to travel to Bualders Gate and re-establish the lost church of Myrkul and begin preaching his words to the people of that region.
Weeks later Verith arrives to the great city of Baulders Gate and begins to make his way south to the Friendly Arm Inn. Deep in the forest, Verith sets out to pray to his lord and then is approached once again by a shadow and he begins to commune with it, voices start approaching Verith and then the shadow disperses. Three elves that had been following him since he passed through the city, they began to accuse Verith of practicing dark arts and as they began to reach for their weapons a robed man approached them that had been watching. The robed man begins to try and convince the elves that they are mistaken and that Verith had done no such thing. The elves ignored the robed man and drew their weapons on Verith. The robed man began to chant causing two of the elves to turn to stone. Verith called upon the dead to assist him, as a skeleton arose with a sythe the last remaining elf began to run but was slain by the undead before he could get away.
Verrith than turns to the robed man to thank him for his assistance, they being to converse about what to do with the other two elves and they came to the conclusion that they would have to be slain. The robed man than began to chant and a green cloud surrounded the two elves and they burst into dust. Verith than learned the name of the robed man and his name was Gareth. He then learned that the reason why Gareth helped him was because he was a servant of Bhaal. Little did Verith know that this event would start an eternal brother hood between them. As they converse more and more a friend of Gareth’s Kalsyn joined them. They began to travel around the outskirts of the cities striking fear into all those they crossed. Than one day, Gareth and Kalsyn approached Verith telling him of a chance to obtain great power, but in order to do so they would need to find an elf sacrifice. They began their search in the city of Baulders Gate and ran into a rude elf who seemed to have the magical properties they needed for the sacrifice.
They followed the elf to an Inn in the city and were able to capture him and sneak him out of the city to Crypts in the Fields of the Dead. They headed deep into the crypt searching for an altar where they met a Dark Mage who had been waiting for them. The mage than began to perform a ritual on the elf to causing a portal to the hells its self to open, and out of the portal came the Lord of the Fifth who began to converse with his servant who had opened the portal. They were interrupted by the sound of clanking shields and heavy armor moving through the halls, for the Triar Paladins had found them and began to attack to send the Lord of the Fifth back into the portal. They were slain quickly but the Lord of the Fifth’s servant had perished, however he did not seemed troubled by this.
The Dark Lord began to converse with us and came to the conclusion that we would be his new servants to do his bidding for him whenever he needed, he then cut his hand and reached it out towards us spraying his blood onto Gareth, Kalysn and Verith binding them by blood forever. Weeks passed by and Gareth approached Verith asking for help in taking care of some elves that threatened him. They followed the elves from the Trade way to the Fields of the Dead, where they planned their attack. They moved quickly as Gareth concentrated on the strongest of the three elves that were there and Verith on the weaker two. One began to flee and Verith gave chase but she made it to the flaming fist barely alive, Verith had to withdraw back and told Gareth the bad news that she still lived.
They began to head north to avoid the hunting parties that would be looking for them. Verith picked up one of the slain elves to perform an ancient ritual on him to enslave him to the will of his master, they made a successful escaped to the north and performed the ritual that was the first step needed to enslaving the elf. Gareth had come to the conclusion that he would have to leave this region for a long time for the elf that made it out alive knew who he was. Verith was wearing a disguise so he could not be linked to the attack, Gareth and Verith began their long journey to Durlags Tower where Gareth would vanish into the underdark. Verith escorted his brother into the heart of the entrance to the Underdark. Verith came up with a plan to fake Gareth’s death so that in time, he would be forgotten, Verith would engrave Gareth’s ring hand with a symbol of Myrkul and then remove his hand saying that he has been slaying giving proof to the elves that hunt for him. Verith removed his brother’s hand prepared spells to regenerate his hand that would take some time. Verith wished is brother good luck and began to plan the final stages of faking Gareth’s death.
