Background:
Da-an was born in a medium-sized village in Shou Lung. His mother, Shasi Kuo, was a highly respected herbalist. His father, Tai Kuo, was a successful and kindly merchant.
When Da-an was little, his mother made him take katana lessons at the nearby monastery. The monastery's master of martial arts was an extremely strict instructor named Fei-Hung Fang. To Da-an's dismay, it was whispered that Fang and Shasi used to be romantically involved.
After almost a decade of training in the monastery, Master Fang sparred once with Da-an to test him. Within seconds, Master Fang knocked Da-an down to the ground, breaking a rib with the impact. The master told the pupil, "You are dead!" and moved on to test the next student.
Da-an never returned to the monastery again, and Fei-Hung Fang left Shou Lung a couple of years later for reasons of his own.
Da-an began to help his mother gather herbs, first by helping to tend her garden, and later by ranging out into the wilds for days at a time. Over the years, the time he spent in the wilderness turned Da-an into a rather competent ranger. Through his mother, he became involved with followers of Chauntea, the western goddess of life and agriculture. Da-an had to do this in secret; in Kara-Tur, followers of the foreign goddess Chauntea are persecuted and sometimes executed.
When Da-an was 28, both of his parents fell ill. His father died first, and his mother clung to life for only a month longer. On her deathbed, Shasi confessed to Da-an that Tai Kuo was not his father. Fei-Hung Fang was. Shasi begged her son to seek out his real father, wherever he had traveled to, and "right a lifetime of wrongs." Although filled with resentment, Da-an promised his mother that he would do as she wished. He left his village soon after Shasi died.
Da-an traveled for more than a year, following an elusive trail of leads and clues across the world. He finally managed to track down Fei-Hung Fang's last student in the far-away city of Neverwinter. The student, a Helmite paladin, told Da-an that Fei-Hung Fang had passed away outside the city of Baldur's Gate almost a year ago. The paladin gave Da-an his father's katanas.
Da-an thanked the paladin and left for Baldur's Gate . . . .
Goals:
To find out just what kind of man his father was. Da-an is currently trying to learn the resting spot of his father and attempt a resurrection. He knows this goes against the teachings of Chauntea, and is not sure that he cares.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Da-an loved Tai Kuo dearly, and resents his mother for her deception.
Da-an's dog is a well-bred hunting dog. Tai Kuo gave it to him as a gift.
Da-an is fascinated by the Sword Coast, a land where followers of Chauntea are not persecuted and forced to worship in secret. He considers the Sword Coast almost a religious homeland.
In his travels across the world, Da-an has heard only praise for Fei-Hung Fang. This upsets him, but he is not sure why.
Da-an uses Fang's katanas, but feels uneasy holding them.
