Background:
Born to parents living in Neverwinter Wood, Gyvari had a rather typical upbringing for a Moon Elf. Upon reaching adulthood, he sought to make a living by working in the nearby city of Neverwinter. He managed to find a job with a merchant who specialized in buying & selling various minor magical items, often brought in by adventurers. As a sideline, the shop also offered services in the repair and maintenance of arms and armor. Gyvari quickly earned a reputation as a master tuner of bows. In fact, the city's famed GrayCloak archers often insisted that Gyvari be the only one to work on their bows.
Life was good for many a year for Gyvari, and when his parents left for the Retreat, he simply settled into small communal village on the outskirts of Neverwinter Wood, within sight of the city walls. The village was a mixture of races, mostly elves, some dwarves, with a few humans and halflings, much like Neverwinter City itself. The village, and the short wagon ride into town each day, was assured safety from attackers by the roving patrols of the city's GrayCloaks keeping the area outside the city walls free from threats.
It was a very happy life, made even more so when Gyvari met her..... Dailnee. Their romance (and marriage) was the completion of his joy, and when he learned he would soon be a father, he nearly burst with love and could not imagine anything he would ever desire more. In fact, he began working a few extra shifts in the store in order to earn a few more coin to make their home a perfect nursery for their coming gift of a child. It was perhaps this which may have lead to the circumstances of him surviving that evil, dreadful night .........
It was late, very late, when the last wagon left the city gates to roll towards the village. Only Gyv (as his friends called him) and a dwarf blacksmith, Ralk, were in the wagon. The trip home was uneventful...until they got close enough to see in the torch and campfire light. The sights would forever haunt Gyv, for the rest of his days.
Bodies, and body parts lay everywhere, strewn throught the village. Blood soaked the streets. It was a slaughter. Jumping from the wagon, Gyvari raced to his tiny house on the far end of the village, leaping through he gore, a sickening feeling growing inside him by the second. Shouting her name, he pushed aside the battered front door, and nearly tripped over her lifeless body, just inside. She was still warm, but gone. Wounds, horrible, terrible wounds all over her beautiful form. And..... her belly, and the gift of joy inside, that which they were waiting for to complete their perfect lives...... Gyvari wretched as he saw the short, black bolts sticking out of the belly, so many it was difficult to count at a glance.
How long he held them in his arms, kneeling there on the floor, he could not tell. It was long past sunrise when a patrol of Graycloaks burst into his house, weapons ready. The other survivor, Ralk, had brought them to the house to check on Gyv, fearing he too had been killed.
After that, Gyvari had very little memory of what happened. But, the one memory that would never fade was the sight of the Graycloaks carrying the body of the one single attacker who lost his life during the raid.......a Drow warrior, hand crossbow and pouch of short, black bolts still hanging from it's belt.
It would be weeks (or months, time mattered little) before Gyvari would regain his senses. During that time, he would often show up for work drunk, or not come in at all. Passing out each nite in the taverns after drinking away the day's wages was the norm, and was taking it's toll on him. Then one night, as he was desparately trying to scrape together enough coin for another bottle, he collapsed, a heap of tears and utter sorrow. His soul broken, he was ready to give up on life when a kindly priest stumbled upon him in the city park. The priest of Shevarash took great interest in his tale, and as soon as Gyvari uttered that word (Drow), the priest felt compelled to do all that he could to rescue the lost spirit in Gyvari.
Giving him shelter, and support, it took a few weeks to help Gyvari regain his health...and his will to live. But, in that same time, something powerful happened. A transformation, a conversion of sorts. The teachings and beliefs of Shevarash seemed to literally touch his tortured soul. A new strength was re-born inside him, perhaps fueled by the utter and total hatred of the Drow they shared. Eventually, he found himself burning with vengence, and ready to act upon it. The priest bought him a basic longbow, some arrows, and some simple clothes. And then, he blessed Gyvari and his new life's mission, and they parted ways.
It was only but a few days later, as Gyvari was bidding farewell to his job and his employer and friends, that the Lord's Alliance armies came down from the North, headed to Baldur's Gate to stop the Amnian invasion at Beregost. The GrayCloaks of Neverwinter were sending a company of archers to join, and many of them naturally came to see if Gyvari would re-string and tune their bows to be ready for war. As fate would have it, some of the Lord's Alliance troops were chatting, and happended to mention hearing a rumour or two about a certain ancient ruin to the south, which supposedly contained a Drow passage beneath it !
That was all it took. It seems the Gods had meant for this to be, there could be no other interpretation ! Gyvari instantly asked if he could possibly accompany the Alliance armies on their journey south. After some kind words from the GrayCloaks, it was agreed that Gyv could ride in a wagon with the other armourers, so long as he earned his keep by tuning up as many bows as he could each day.
Once the Alliance reached Baldur's Gate, Gyvari jumped off the wagon, bow in hand, a few treasured books in a pack, and began what would be his new life........ as an Avenging hunter and killer of the Drow (or at least he prayed so).............
Goals:
- to find other Night Hunters/Black Archers of Shevarash with whom to join forces with and possibly become a formal member of the group.
-to eventually become a mighty archer, so to enter the Underdark to slay all Drow
- to discover ways to use magics and elemental energy to better his killing power
- to learn the methods of the Avengers/Assassins to put to use in his revenge upon the Drow and any who support them.
- to perhaps find a new home (and peace in his tortured soul) to replace part of what the Drow took from him, including reconnecting with his Elven heritage.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- has great (secret) self-doubts about his own abilities to fulfill his goal of a slayer of Drow.
- loves to tinker with magical items and trinkets
- wishes he was a wizard, as is fascinated by them and their command of magic
-treasures his bag of books given by boss/friend about assassins, magic, elemental power and more... which he spends too much time daydreaming while reading, only further fueling his burning desires for vengence.
