The two halfling children Xanner and Danner Broadbelt ran about the top of Knotter hill with all their neighbor friends. In all twelve halfling children playing a spirited game of chase the chicken. “That one's tired now too”, Xanner said pointing to yet another fatigued chicken that, no matter what the children did, refused to run any longer. The largest of the children, Danner immediately said “Oki, who wants to challenge the champion at rock the noggen”? All eleven of them turned the other way and started looking for more chickens. Looking at Xanner, Danner asked “Hey little brother, you want a shot?” Nobody was even near as good as Danner at rock the noggen. One of many simple halfling throwing games, rock the noggen involved two halflings squaring off at twenty paces. Each threw three rocks, the idea being to see how close you could come to the other persons head without actually hitting them. If you flinched, moved, or ducked in any way, you lose. If you have the truest aim and your stones are closer you win. Likewise if you get hit…you win. “Common” Danner teased, “you have to beat me at something today”. Xanner smirked and began looking for stones. Xanner was determined to beat Danner this time, after all Dan had beat him at everything this morning including two riddle games, one game of pumpkin push, one game of name-the-poop, and had kicked his favorite chicken Tillberry. The other kids were getting very excited. They all lined up on two sides creating a lane for the stone throwing contest. Danner had his stones already picked out and was anxiously waiting. Xanner had two but could not find another one that was small enough. “Just pick one Xan” Dan yelled. “Better get a small one. You might not be able to throw it far enough”. The other kids began laughing and snickering. Xanner bent down and picked up the nearest rock he could find. It was a pretty big one and one side of it had an edge with a point. “Fine, I’m ready” Xanner yelled. The champion always threw first. Danner played to the crowd, licking his thumb and holding it up in the air acting as if he were testing the wind. The other children began chanting “Danner, Danner, Danner”. With a beautiful sidearm toss the rock soared through the air. Xanner closed his eyes but he heard the rock miss his left ear by a hair. All the children erupted, yelling and jumping. The game was already over and Xanner knew it. There was no way he could get that close to Dan. Before he knew what he was doing Xanner threw the large, pointed rock as hard as he could…Danner won.
“Get up little brother, we’re here” Danner said. Xanner sat up rubbing his eyes trying to clear the dream from his groggy head. It was a dream he always hated, a moment in his life that had changed the twin brothers forever. “Where are we?”, Xanner asked. With a smile Danner grabbed his dwarvish made waraxe and headed for the side of the boat. “Sign says Baldur's Gate” he said
