Background:
Mila Pricklyfingers, known as 'Fingers' throughout most of her early life, was born in poverty and raised most of her life various downtrodden slums in Athkatla. She does not remember much of her childhood in the slums. She has no memory of her mother ever having been a part of her life, who she was, or what became of her since her father never spoke of her. More often than not, she was left to fend for herself except on the rare occasion that he would bring her along with him into the company of, lets say, less than ideal disheaveled individuals who were doing things that she probably didnt want to know about, truth be told.
Being very poor, food was obtained mostly from the local market stalls and bakery by theft. Her father planned for this and often included her in these plans. When he was not around, it became much more difficult to take food without being noticed by the merchants. Often, while attempting to acquire some food to eat, she would get spotted and hear the words 'Get your fingers off of those!', followed by a slap on the hand or a rap with a cane or other blunt instrument, resulting in damaged appendages for her attempts.
Not being a good thief resulted in a nickname among the local children. They would see her bandage fingers and point and exclaim 'fingers, fingers, look at her fingers! She's a thief!' Of course, she hated their nicknames. She heard that particular nickname so often.
And then one day, her father never came home and she never heard of what might have happened to him. She waited and worried for days. But she did not seek out the company her father was around. They were not likely to care nor care to help her. She decided, some time later to leave the slum. From that time on, whenever anyone she encountered would ask what her name was, she simply told them 'Fingers'. When moving into a new area or region, using the nickname simply became convenience and made it easier to stay anonymous, or to leave quietly if the need might arise.
After leaving Athkatla, Fingers traveled to the north aways, unsure of really what to do with herself. Stopping one late night in a roadside inn, she made the acquaintance of the inn's owner, Neb. Neb was a tiefling who ran the inn and a small tavern in the back where various sorts of entertainment was taking place. Neb took Fingers in, letting her work at the inn doing various chores, serving hungry and thirsty customers whatever they might need from the establishment. In addition to letting Fingers earn her keep at the inn, Neb taught Fingers how to fight with dagger, a weapon he seemed very proficient with. This was for, he said, if trouble ever came to the inn she might have a chance to ward off any invaders. Neb had a harsh, gruff personality, no doubt about it; Fingers slowly over time began to earn his respect it seemed, though slow it was to come. However, she always felt there were things he was not letting her be privy to. This feeling would prove right, late one night some unknown enemies of Neb invaded the inn setting fire to the place and burning it to the ground. Most of those present were massacred as the place was raized to the ground, evidently Neb along with his beloved place.
One of the attackers who helped burn the inn to the ground took Fingers hostage that night, his 'trophy', he said. She had no idea what her captor had planned for her, and she did not want to stay around to find out. Late in the night after pretending to fall asleep, she took the dagger she'd hidden and cut his throat as he slept. Under the cover of moonlight she watched the life bleed out from her captor and crept out of their encampment, and ran. She managed to put quite a distance between herself and the attackers that night, fear guiding every step she took. She continued her travels north, some time much later finding the Trade Way, and from there making her way to Baldur's Gate.
Arriving in Baldur's Gate, she used the nickname 'Fingers' for quite some time. However seeking to distinguish herself from the thieving nature the nickname implies, she has lately reverted to her birth name Mila.

Possible plothook ideas and misc. facts
She, of course, is interested in learning who her mother was and what happened to her. Not having a mother in her life has had a profound effect that may be learned through RP with her by the observant character. As well, she is interested in learning what became of her father, whether he is alive, left of his own free will by abandoning her, or otherwise.
