Background:
Kaelan's earliest memories begin with the darkness of the alleys in Luskan underground passages, he was born in a poor family then traded as a slave to a group of thieves, and they were called the Black Rose. During his early life the boy couldn't remember any family, warmth or even kindness. Instead he just remembers the clink of the gold stolen from his innocent victims or the sound of a security door lock picked by his hands. Kaelan was raised in an environment where his group taught him how to be a ruthless deceiver. As a young boy, he was the ideal decoy and managed to deceive even noble people with his innocent face and eyes. While the exact motives of his group remained mysterious to Kaelan, he didn't care about it at all; he knew that if he ever tried to betray them he would be dead.
His life was unchanged, but he grew tired of it and considered running away until one day the boy met an unusually beautiful Air Genasi slave. Like him she was traded, initially he thought of her like a brother but as time passed he felt that they were alike. Day after day he sat up in front of her listening to her stories inside the prison. Her name was Ryel, she was suffering but her time with Ethan helped her to endure it. Years passed and as Kaelan matured he began to develop feelings for her. After knowing about Akadi through Ryel, he started daydreaming during his tasks; so much that one day he didn't follow the orders of his group by letting go a girl with her father. He didn't want to hurt them.
The leader of the Black Rose didn't like that, but instead of killing him they just tortured Kaelan in order to avoid possible failures in the future. After a few weeks the boy came back (he managed to endure the torture but he was fragile and weak), he searched for Ryel just to find her prison cell empty. They had known about their friendship and sold her for petty coin before Kaelan was to return. For the first time in his life Kaelan was furious and frustrated. He couldn't care about people and his job but now he was experiencing the pain of losing the only person that meant anything to him. A year passed, each night the dark memories of the past haunted him. He gritted his teeth thinking about Ryel. He realized that there was nothing quite so cutting as a guilty mind. He began to think about Akadi seriously, the thought of serving The Black Rose and Mask were so far right now. The same night instead of following other orders, Kaelan disappeared from Luskan. Two years passed since then, Kaelan changed his identity in Ethan, and he didn't want to be recognized. Reforming himself to look like a weak and defenseless coward, in an attempt to avoid becoming the man he once were. Now he's just a traveler looking for Ryel and a way to give her back the freedom she deserves, following her teachings and memories Ethan became devoted to Akadi and freedom.

If they don't give up, the losers of today will become the winners of tomorrow. Don't think highly of your victories and don't despise yourself after defeat, believe in the flow of our goddess and believe in yourself...”

It doesn't look like it but all of his actions are calculated. The majority of the time he will try to find a way to join a group or improve himself; learning and watching other people. He doesn't really enjoy training but will try his best to become stronger in order to accomplish his objectives.
