Is xp camping illegal?

I know in the rules its frowned upon but is it at all against the rules? I've heard a few conflicting explanations towards this.
I know there are alot of powerbuilders camping in the haunted mansion for hours and hours on end. One guy told me he got to lvl 19 in 5 days... thats insane!! It's taken me months to do that lol. Alot of ppl just go afk and leave their chars to gain xp without having to worry about dying because of their super powerbuilds lol.

What does everyone else think? In my opinion It's hard for legitimate roleplayer to grind here and there and get some xp when people are camping for hours on end.

Just curious!

If people truly are AFK camping in an area, tell a DM. We'll be glad to make them pay a death penalty... or two. If the behavior persists, they may find that it takes a lot more time to get to level 19.

People aren't AFK-camping, they're just staying in one area for hours at a time. The rules seem to suggest it would be better if you didn't - Rule 13.
Rule 13 wrote: 13. There is no rule against grinding. All we ask is to be considerate to others and not camp an area for several hours and by doing so, not giving others a chance to grind in this area as well.

Well I know for a fact they are doing both. I've messaged people in various areas and never get a response... when there are 10+ loot bags around them and they aren't answering 4 or 5 tells over a 2 hours period im pretty sure they are afk camping.

It doesn't affect me in anyway though! I was just curious to see what the general consensus was on this ;)

Thanks guys!

I bet you money that they were all monks.

In addition, I spent an entire day grinding from 17 to 18 on my Drow. (Equivalent of 19-20) I was gaining on average a level per day but I would never AFK grind. How would I retain my sanity? I play in Windowed mode and watch TV on the other half of the screen while I was running around killing slimes.

While yes, I did basically hold this area for a couple days I would always party with people if they came in. That is the line I'd say, if I refused to then it's unjustified.

well I definitely don't have a problem with that! I've done that too :)

And the funny thing was that two of the people doing it were monk! Nice call!

Yeah, who ever called out the Monks may be on to something. I have seen this at the haunted house several times. Another hot spot for this type of behaviour is the top lvl of the Bugbear mines when characters are lower levels. I've seen people do it there as well. I don't hate on other people for wanting to get to a high lvl without actually playing the game, to each there own, it just doesn't appeal to me.

The desire to get to epic lvls is overrated in my opinion, enjoy the ride.

It would be fun to shoot one of them to death with arrows or crossbow bolts. Imagine their surprise when they woke up. Ha.

...It's against the rules to go AFK and do nothing?

I'll keep that in mind then (No, I didn't do it :P)

LOL...no, but they're saying it's against the rules to go AFK where your character can farm XP with very little chance of death (i.e. the only way a mob is ever going to hit you is with a natural 20).

I have and play a monk, and I love the haunted mansion. But you're crazy if you think I'm gonna just leave him there unattended!

I've literally fallen asleep once while in the bugbear mines. When I woke up in the fugue plane, I hadn't gained any XP cause melee doesn't even auto attack thus you just get wailed on and killed.

True story.

My employer doesn't like it when I do that. Trust me, I've tried.

Hmm I don't get how people survive. Even if you were only hit by Natural 20s. If you had no regen and you couldn't heal (since your afk), eventually you would die?
