Background:
Independent from an early age and not by choice, Kimberly lived mostly by herself from the age of five. Her mother had given Kimberly as much of her time as she could but with no husband and one source of income, Kimberly had little choice but to grow up quick. Her mother spent most nights and days earning her living as an escort to the wealthy bachelors of Waterdeep and Kimberly had envied her as a child, looking on from her mother’s bed as she adorned herself with expensive jewellery, classy dresses and exotic perfumes, some of the many gifts she often received from her more particular clients. Kimberly didn’t quite understand the duties of her mother’s occupation but whatever her mother did, Kimberly was sure it must have been fabulous.
Childhood in Waterdeep’s Trade Ward was not unkind to Kimberly. A natural social butterfly, she had many friends in the many social groups that she drifted to and from but never calling any one group her own. Though she loved her friendships and the adventures they took her on, she never truly felt a sense of belonging outside of the books she loved to read. Ships and sailors, kings and castles, maidens in distress and the handsome paladins who rescue them and all of it happening just outside the gates of her city where adventuring troupes of mixed races from far-away lands risked it all for adventure and gold. That is where she felt she truly belonged.
As a young adult, Kimberly had waited tables during the day and by night; she entertained patrons with song, dance and the pleasure of her company. Her tips were frequent and generous but the work was tiresome, rough and often demeaning but she kept her head up through it all, compelled by her dreams of fame and fortune. Her tips had afforded her a small but comfortable apartment that she shared with a colleague, two small meals a day and regular bardic training but only with stringent budgeting. Her journey from home to college to work takes her past the fanciful boutiques of Sea Ward and she averted her eyes from the store widows that displayed all the things she desired but could not afford. Struggling to find balance in her life, Kimberly often brushed with defeat.
Kimberly was excited to graduate not for the achievement but because the struggle was finally over and she had survived if only just. Now her dreams could finally be realized. She would quit her job, give the one-finger-salute to the owner, move out of her apartment and perhaps into North Ward where she would surround herself with the well-to-do and dance only in the most exclusive of venues. She would eat fancy cheese with names she can’t pronounce but would look cute trying, drink wines from lands she had never heard of and indulge herself in the admiration of her audience and the countless men who would ask for her hand in marriage. All she would have to do is land that first job. It never came.
Disheartened by failed auditions, fired for a “lack of enthusiasm” and evicted for a lack of coin, Kimberly was homeless and sick of the city that shattered her dreams.
She didn’t care where the caravan was going, just as long as it took her as far her coin could take her from this city.
Goals:Fame and wealth.
