Background:
Born in Neverwinter to a Helmite father and a bardic mother, Aston Keir was always taught to help others. He took after his mother' cheerful disposition, and yet chose to follow his father's footsteps as a paladin of Helm.
But from his first days as a paladin, it was obvious that Aston didn't fit in with his fellow paladins. While his colleagues were generally serious and rigidly strict, Aston was quick to smile and loose with his mannerisms. It wasn't long before Aston found himself socially isolated from the other paladins in his area. Even his own father found him exasperating, at best.
Aston left Neverwinter for a few years. His travels took him all the way to Rashemen, where he trained in swordsmanship with a Shou Lung master. It was in Rashemen that Aston "found his center."
Upon his return to Neverwinter, Aston decided to take up residence in the slums to do Helm's work for the poor. During this time, Aston helped a young investigator break a small slavery ring. Despite these efforts, a few slaves were illegally sold before the slavers were shut down.
Aston left Neverwinter with the investigator to track down one of these slaves, a young boy named Elias. Their search was ultimately fruitless; Elias turned up on his own, without any help from Aston or his companion.
Aston returned to the Neverwinter slums, where he continued to try to protect the innocent. In light of his prior failure to save the slaves that had been sold off, Aston decided to make certain compromises to better protect the slum dwellers.
When asked about these compromises, Aston generally will not elaborate on them. For these compromises lead to his fall from grace as a paladin. The strict codes of paladinhood forbid such compromises.
However, even though Helm would no longer accept Aston as a paladin, the young man found that he still had some measure of the god's favor.
The situation in Aston's neighborhood eventually stabilized somewhat, and the young man found some time for himself.
Then Aston heard about the social unrest occurring in the Baldur's Gate region . . .
Goals:
To protect those who need protecting.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Aston will not lie; when people make the common mistake of assuming that he is a paladin, Aston will tell them that he is a former paladin. But if they ask why he fell from grace, he only says that he was not paladin material.
For a former paladin, Aston sure knows a bit about street life.
It has been (often) said that Aston is not like most Helmites. This is probably because Aston is a rather cheerful individual. A few people have mistakenly assumed this to be why Aston lost his paladinhood.
Aston learned the Shou language from his sword master in Rashemen. His master was originally from Shou Lung.
He learned basic herbology while in Rashemen.
Aston knows basic Dwarven, from dealing with dwarven weapon and armor smiths throughout his life.
