Background:

Kelburn was raised in a close-knit family in the Ironfaar stronghold. He grew up with strong relationships with all of his siblings: Pudd, Tagnar, Durgan, and Hehla. His youth was similar to that of most dwarves, gaining an appreciation for the deep places of the earth, for expert craftsmanship, fine stone, and of course, a good mug of ale.

When he was young he began having strange experiences that he could not explain. One such example was what he calls the day of the mountain pass. He was travelling with a group of dwarves through a mountain pass when he heard a roar from the heavens. The thunderous bellow seemed distant, and he seemed to only hear echoes of its cry. Though the noise was clearly audible, none of the other dwarves could hear it. He heard the noise many times throughout the day as they made their journey, and each time he was the only dwarf to hear the roaring in the sky.

As the evening came on and the sun began to fall beneath the horizon, the band of hardy dwarves was ambushed by a swarm of orcs. In the midst of the conflict between the age-old foes, dwarven steel and determination met orcish ferocity. In the end, the dwarves managed to fight off the assailants, but not without heavy losses. Amongst the dead was found Pudd, Kelburn’s oldest brother. It was a tragic day. Kelburn only slept when sadness and exhaustion overtook him.

In his sleep, Kelburn had a dream. He was walking along a pleasant stone path toward a mountain far in the distance. The sky was clear, the sun shined its warmth, and the grass, as far as the eye could see, was a healthy green. It seemed that no matter how long he walked, the mountain never got closer. Despite the brightness of the day, his mind was filled with shadows of darkness as his only thoughts swirled around the loss of his oldest brother. Eventually he passed a pond of clear water that had only a pink blossomed tree to keep it company. In the tree were seven yellow canaries singing a beautiful song, while under the tree stood a ragged old man. Leaning on his staff for support, his gaze was locked on Kelburn as he walked down the stone way.

Kelburn heard a faint roar roll across the sky.

The hermits gaze seemed to pull Kelburn toward him. The young and healthy dwarf suddenly felt some strange curiosity and desire to communicate with the stranger.

Off the stone path he went.

The old man had an aura of wisdom and power surrounding him. Before long, Kelburn was sitting at the hermit’s feet as they conversed, as if at the feet of a great sage. The pain of Pudd’s death disappeared and was replaced by hope, healing, and renewal of purpose. He felt like he had received direction. As they talked, the canaries continued to sing a beautiful song in the tree. After a while, the images began to slowly fade, and the sounds slowly morphed into inaudible muffles.

Kelburn awoke suddenly from the dream. He could remember none of the conversation, not a single word. Only the images and the feelings he had experienced.

Several years after the incident of the mountain pass, Kelburn was reading a book of lore concerning dragons because of the growing interest he found in learning about them. He began reading of Bahamut the Platinum Dragon, God of Justice. He read of how Bahamut was known to disguise himself as an old man, with seven great golden wyrms disguised as canaries escorting him, while he talked with the beings of lesser planes. Kelburns eyes grew wide as the knowledge of what he was reading hit him like a revelation.

Kelburn’s passion for dragon-kind began growing dramatically as he gained an insatiable desire to study everything he could about them, particularly Bahamut. Their prowess, wisdom, and the glory of their might deeply impressed him. When he felt the time was right, Kelburn bade farewell to his family and clan Ironfaar in search of how to connect with Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon and hermit-sage.

While away, Kelburn joined a metallic dragon clan and was imbued with the powers of the wyrm. He became a worshipper of Bahamut and a protector of good.

After being gone for ten years, Kelburn received word of a Duergar invasion on his home. He rushed to the land of his youth as swiftly as he could. Upon his return, he found the Ironfaar stronghold decimated, and the clan broken and without a leader. He discovered that his parents had been slain in the violence, and that his brother Tagnar had been exiled just a few years after he had left in search of dragon-kind.

With the rest of the remaining Ironfaar, Kelburn swore fealty to Dovkin Battlehammer, King of
Kraak Helzak – the unification of many dwarven clans.

Kelburn sees Kraak Helzak as the greatest opportunity for the re-emergence of a powerful dwarven presence. For his people, he feels duty bound to help build up the cause and influence of Kraak Helzak. Not only is he convinced that the power of dragon-kind will help build a mighty dwarven nation, but he also believes that Kraak Helzak would be a powerful asset for Bahamut in the coming war against Tiamat, the Queen of Evil Dragons. He hopes to serve both purposes in his endeavors.

Since returning to the area surrounding Baldur’s Gate, Kelburn has become reunited with his surviving siblings Durgan, Hehle, and Tagnar.

Goals:
1. To use the powers of dragon-kind to help build Kraak Helzak and a dwarven nation
2. To convert dwarves to the worship of Bahamut and help them see the usefulness of dragon power
3. To prepare dwarves to participate in the coming Dragonfall War that will take place between Bahamut and Tiamat
4. Kills orcs and duergar whenever possible
