Laitae hangs up posters at the Friendly Arm Inn and at the various Inns in Baldur's Gate.

"As a means to investigate the current drought, I am organizing an experiment. All mages, druids and priests capable of casting the spell Control Weather that wish to help can contact me for more information and discussion on how we are to do this.

The druid Araulan walks through the farmlands looking over the dry and bleached soil. Chanting a spell of Commune with Nature, he asks the following two questions:
"Is this weather unnatural?"
"Are there any unnatural creatures in the area?"

Commune with Nature
You become one with nature, attaining knowledge of the surrounding territory. You instantly gain knowledge of as many as three facts from among the following subjects: the ground or terrain, plants, minerals, bodies of water, people, general animal population, presence of woodland creatures, presence of powerful unnatural creatures, or even the general state of the natural setting.

In outdoor settings, the spell operates in a radius of 1 mile per caster level. In natural underground settings—caves, caverns, and the like—the radius is limited to 100 feet per caster level. The spell does not function where nature has been replaced by construction or settlement, such as in dungeons and towns.

This is info related to the ritual that James can give could be gleaned from the City Relief Effort reports James posts in the Ilmater Temple. I was asked about it through a PM and thought I'd put the consolidated information here as well:

1) The drought has been assumed supernatural for two reasons. First, Arch Druid Thergal attempted to summon relief rain to the farms something interfered with his ritual. Second, Candlekeep weather records going back 400 years have recorded nothing as dire or extreme as the current drought.

2) The source/cause of the drought is unknown. Some say Malarites since it has been proven Malarites are behind another problem called "The Fear" (see later). Other sources say Thayans are secretly behind it and still others that Bhaalists and Banites are behind it. It's essentially, as far as James is concerned, a giant mess of conspiracy theories.

3) Thergal is currently out of commission. He was attempting to locate and stop "The Fear" and he and other druids ran into two groups of Malarites powering orbs through forest destruction. The orbs were destroyed and the forest began to recover but slowly. The orbs were said to be causing "The Fear" which was sending all the Black Orc tribe's prey animals into elven territory and thus causing a great deal of friction and potential war between orcs and elves. When Thergal attempted to fight one particular Malarite (details get fuzzy here) Thergal survived, the Malarite did not, but Thergal now acts as if possessed. He is being contained and treated, but this has thoroughly distracted the druidic Circle who now have no Arch Druid. James is frustrated in his attempts to get their help since because of Thergal's situation they are wholly focused on Malarites and not (in his opinion) looking at the potentially larger picture. *

4) Since druids were in short supply Miss Laitae kindly pointed out that strong arcanists can perform similar magic and might, in combination with many other ritualists, either punch through the magic causing the drought or at the very least get a 'taste' of what is interfering with it and potentially track down the source. Druids were James' first hope, but after two months of no results he's grateful for any help.

*As a side note some amulets were taken off the Malarites. Candlekeep has been working on using them to track down other groups of Malarites. They point to Sharptooth woods at present, though where specifically James is uncertain. If the ritual gleans nothing this may be another lead.

After being told about the City Relief Effort by James White, Zarlathur a druid is eager to help find the cause of this drought.

He wonders the woods looking for anything that may point him to the cause of this drought
"The land needs to be pure again... I fear if we do not act quickly, the effects may be permanent.I must find this 'Laitae' James has told me about, and see what i can do to help."

//Would like confirmation by DMs on the results of my spell. Also, Thergal is not the only druid in the grove. Also, Araulan has approached someone in the past (Pate or James or both) and was told he would be contacted at the Shrine of Silvanus if needed. No reply has come so he has assumed they do not require his help.

//Just drawing attention to this:
A druid casting this spell doubles the duration and affects a circle with a 3-mile radius.

/* Doesn't really matter for the experiment.

Also, if someone wants to talk with Laitae ingame about this, they should do so, and not send me tells that they want to do so while staring at me before just walking off again. Now, if we could keep this thread as IC as possible, that would be awesome. If you have something OOC to tell me, then do so in PMs. */

Laitae walks around and hangs up new posters wherever they might have been ripped down or taken by the wind. If anyone asks her for details, she says that once she has talked with enough people able to cast the spell, she will contact them all for a meeting where the details can be discussed, but that the most likely location for the experiment will be just north of the farmlands so as to not cause any ill effects due to experimentation.

Due to the drought, the famers of the north had little work for Grubnar, so his efforts were directed towards the south, replanting the trees torn from the earth to make war. This along with aiding the farmers of the south was all that he thought that he could do until he heard the voice of the faceless elf speak with his Priestess.

He could do more! With Priestess ‘s blessing and her skills with markings a letter was written as send via carrier wolf…

Laitae,
Grubnar is strong with Mother Chauntea and has a good rapport with the local farmers, in spite of most other’s views on Orcs. He is simple yet wise….

Kaltyra

Grubnar insisted I add the following “Grubnar help female elf make rain.”

Unable to learn anything from the land, Araulan turns and walks away, leaving the city to its fate.

Laitae leaves letters for the priests of the temples in Baldur's Gate:

"I am organizing an experiment to investigate the cause and source of the drought, and so preferably be able to solve this problem. The experiment entails having several mages, priests and druids capable of casting the Control Weather spell and putting their minds to create light rain. This experiment will of course not happen in the farmlands, but to the north, in Thundar's Ride.

Therefore I humbly ask if you would be willing to contribute to this experiment with your divinely granted powers. I will be holding a meeting soon at the Merchant's League's offices in the Docks district where I have rented a meeting room, and would appreciate any input you might have to this experiment and the investigation as a whole.

Reader Laitae Lafreth
of Candlekeep"

She then casts sendings to the people she's talked with (Guide Wendel, Kaltyra, Grubnar, Kestral, Calinde, Zarlathur, Zalvius Curiata, Ambrose Valexus and Krisoel Hawklight):

"Meeting for the control weather experiment will be held at [Faerûn time*] in the Merchant's League, Docks District, Baldur's Gate."

/* *When are you people available for a meeting about this? I'm pretty much available at any time.

Renting of meeting room in the Merchant's League approved by Elad through DM Galadriel in game. Reservation for 50 gold and rent for 50 gold. */
