N'Varra Wren
Posted: Thu Aug 23, 2012 5:32 am
First Name: N'Varra (Varra for short)
Last Name: Wren
Appearance: A human female of smallish stature, in her mid/early twenties. She has bronze skin owing to her C a l i s h i t e ancestry, with dark hair that she typically wears pulled back into a pony tail. Her eyes are a subtle grey colour and compliment her relatively attractive face.
Race: Human
Age: 23
Height: 5 foot 6 inches
Weight: 130 lbs
Eyes: Grey/light brown
Hair: Black
Personality Profile: She's generally outgoing and likeable. Smart enough in an objective sense but lacking a certain degree of introspection and foresight.
General Health: Good.
Deity: Umberlee.
Initial Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
Profession: Previously a musician, storyteller, and occasional support fighter for a band of C a l i s h i t e mercenaries/thieves.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Bard, planning to take levels in Dissonant Chord and possibly something like Dread Pirate.
Habits/Hobbies: She has a tendency to rub the back of her neck when she's uncomfortable or embarassed. Very occasionally she smokes cigars. She enjoys poetry and the performing arts. Orcs make her nervous. Favorite colour is yellow.
Languages: Common (with an accent), Alzhedo, Cant
Weapon of Choice: Rapier or other light sword.
Background: Varra never knew her biological parents and doesn't know what happened to them. She was raised communally by a troupe of mercenaries/thieves. They worked for rival Pashas in the Calim desert and the seas near Calimport when they could, and stole to make ends meet when they couldn't. Though N'Varra never developed a real talent in thievery, she proved to be an acceptable fighter and a gifted musician and storyteller. It often fell to her to build morale and work minor healing magics when raids failed or went badly.
Occasionally they would venture as far North as the swamplands and Marching Mountans, where they would find themselves under threat of Orc attack and frequently took heavy casualties.
On one particular raid, the company found their way into the lair of a lesser Djinn. During the raid, the Djinn returned to its home and, enraged, proceeded to slaughter nearly the entire company - slowly, and one by one. As she was forced to witness the disembowelment of her adoptive family, N'Varra subconsciously began to whistle and hum nervously to herself. Of course like other Genies, Djinni typically tend to be fond of opulent Faerunian culture, including the Arts. Though she never learned the real reason why, Varra privately believes that music may have been be why the Djinn kept Varra and a mage named Argus as slaves rather than killing them outright like the rest.
Months of captivity and forced labor in harsh conditions followed. Argus was unable to cope with the slaughter he'd witnessed and committed suicide by ingesting poison. After many months of attempts, N'Varra found a weakness in the Djinn's magical wards that could be countered with bardsong, and made good her escape.
After a week in the desert she dragged herself into the outskirts of Calimport. Terrified that the Djinn might find her and enact vengeance, and lacking any family to speak of, she sent a fervent prayer to Umberlee and stowed away on the first cargo ship headed out of the Southwest.
Goals: -Having arrived in Baldur's Gate, she's essentially fulfilled the only goal she had for years beyond simple survival, which was to get far away from Calimshan and vengeful Djinni, and blend into the hustle and bustle of the big city.
-As a result, for the time being she drifts somewhat aimlessly; going where the proverbial winds take her.
-She strives to come to terms with a youth spent in crime and villainy, and adjusting to a more civilized society
-At some later date she will become aware of the gap in her family life (vis-a-vis them being killed) and seek out an accepting group; some degree of a familial atmosphere.
-She furthermore will at some point have to "face the music" in some form or other for killings and lesser crimes committed as a member of the mercenary gang. Whether that comes in the form of retribution, prosecution, or something else remains to be seen and decided but her goal will remain one of survival.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: Assassins/Law enforcement from Calimshan, Vengeful Djinni, unknown relatives, etc. would all be plausible/welcomed.
Currently involved in an interesting player-driven plot that I'm not sure I'm at liberty to discuss publically, but if DM's want details they can PM me.
Edit: Can't say "C a l i s h i t e" because of profanity filters.
