Background:
Aetius Cento lived his childhood years as a merchant class bourgeois—a family of weapon makers of extreme detail and worth sought by both nobles and others—assisting in the family business, receiving private schooling, etc. Then the horns grew in....
Aetius was beset by this event, knowing little of where to turn, or who to turn to. He couldn't bring himself to show his parents, his family, of what was occurring to him in this moment of puberty and growth, so he ran...ran away from the city of Waterdeep, staying off the main roads, using his quick handed skill to rob the farmers of enough food and drink to survive between town and village.
After a year of this petty crime and mode of survival, Aetius stumbled upon an encampment of traveling actors, bards and playwrights, out in an open field, practicing and causing much delight amongst their own while doing so. When he entered the camp—shy and reserved to not be too intrusive—he was welcomed and asked to remove his hood...and not one single person even batted an eye at his horns, his particular complexion, nor his odd, thin blue eyes. Some form of wave of relief washed over him, and for the first time in months, he could relax in his own person...and eventually learn of the reality of his heritage—that he was planetouched. Whether he would ever return to Waterdeep, to confront his family or search to how he was this, tiefling, would remain an unanswered question to this day. For now, what was all encompassing to Aetius was this group of musicians, outcasts, and—as he would slowly learn and copy—minor rogues, and that he could be with them, that they would accept him. In turn, he became a part of the troupe, easily playing the roles of demons or devils or fey in whatever comedy or drama the troupe would be performing at the time, as they traveled up and down the Sword Coast.
As Aetius grew a few years older, and through his later teens, he excelled at the more acrobatic aspects of the troupe—juggling, card games and cups—and, simultaneously, showing special skill in the minor magic tricks and illusions performed by the low-skilled mages that created the theatrical effects during performances. Aetius was inspired by the color, lights and illusions used to bring a "vision" to life.
It was just before Aetius turned 20, that the troupe arrived in Baldur's Gate, to the Palace District, in order to be a part of festivities and perform for the upper class citizens of the city. But ill-fated was this time, as a great even occurred in the Palace District: a dragon, The Dragon, is summoned, and during the destructive event, Aetius's troupe is destroyed and scattered...leaving Aetius at a great loss, of friends, and of family.
Left with but 1000 gold coins in his satchel, he has turned to this city of the Gate as a new home. Learning quickly that the city is home to a renowned theater, many guilds with knowledge and quite the stream of adventures coming through it's ports, Aetius settles into his new role...what ever that may come to be.
Goals:
- To create and found the Mirari.
- Seek out the beautiful mysteries of illusionistic magic.
- Adventure and seek those that share his penchant for the shadow-magic.
- Create a new group of friends and family, to replace the hole in his life, after the unfortunate destruction of his troupe.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- Aetius Cento is fresh to the adventurer ways...his magic must be learned, and his racial ties to the shadow-magic must be developed in time.
- Aetius has lower-end skills in Bluff, Sleight of Hand, Lore and use of Magic Devices...in order to provide him a capacity to perform upon the streets, as a means to profit and learn about things.
- A childhood in the merchant trade business —albeit small—has left a small mark or memory to how political dealings drive a market.
