Background:
When of a young age Cal and his father moved to the Gate. There Cal's father was a vendor of trinkets in the docks district. Mostly his father would hork trinkets out to newly arrived tourists along the docks, citing them to be imbued with arcane power, divine luck. Though for the most part the items were mundane, Cal felt drawn to a broken sword hilt that his father had reluctantly accepted in a trade. The sword had a blue gem stone at the end of the hilt, that Cal's father thought he could pry out and sell for a bit of gold. While his father was busy chasing potential clients around, Cal took the hilt for himself and went down to the sewers for a bit of secluded play time. While lost in his own drawn up fantasy, some desperate rats decided to try to take a chunk out of the young hin. Startled by the ferocious vermin Cal yelped and fell backward, holding the hilt out in front of him. To his surprised a small bolt of electricity leaped out of the stone stinging the pack of rats, sending them back into the darkness. Cal looked into the stone with astonishment, though that feeling was short lived at the sight of the fractured gem. Cal surely received a lashing from his father upon his return that night....
As the years passed Cal was intrigued by his bout in the sewers and took to books to learn as much as he could about the nature of arcane items. In such developed a surprising ability to learn and grasp the material on the page. The words seemed to melt off the page and file themselves into his mind.
One night while returning back to help his father close his stall at the docks, Cal noticed a large group gathered around. At first he was surprised that so many people would be interested in souvenirs, until he noticed a priest of Gond kneeling over a laid out body of a halfing. Cal pushed back the crowd to see his father still alive, but delirious from fever. The priest did would he could to stabilize him enough to be taken to their small hut of a home. Cal's father did not make it through the night succumbing to the sudden illness.


Goals: To continue his talent with the arcane through study, and to collect old artifacts and relics to further his knowledge. A perfect place he found was the fabled Candlekeep, as a result Cal wishes to join the order of these scholars.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: One day during some elective reading Cal came across a tale of an old powerful tome, last sited in the Gate some 200 years ago....(http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/T ... he_Unicorn)

Plot hook #2: Turned out Cal's father dealt in more than innocent trinkets and his sudden illness and death may not be so mysterious at all, in fact Cal went to thank the priest he saw at the docks but was greeted to strange looks from the priesthood there as all their members were attending an assembly at the time.
