Short-Version Background:
Lillith was born in Waterdeep, the eldest daughter of a dock-district fortuneteller named Eve (in truth a sorcerer and skilled conjurer) who used her talents to eke out a living for her and her two children. Both Lillith and her sister were born sickly and sightless, though exactly why is unknown: perhaps as a consequence of their mother’s dabbling in magic, or the creatures she conjured to learn of men’s fortunes. Lillith’s younger sister died of her illness and deformities when Lillith was only ten, and the loss drove Eve somewhat insane with grief. Determined not to lose her other daughter to a similar fate, Eve conjured a devil from the Hells and arranged a Pact with a powerful fiend: power and health for her daughter, in exchange for Eve’s service both in life and after, for so long as her children and children’s children lived, unto the ninety-ninth generation, or something along those lines. At the conclusion of the deal and the sealing of the Pact, the devils spirited Eve away, breathed power and vitality into Lillith, and stuck the infernal red eyes into her face. Lillith would live, but now found herself utterly alone in the world…
She lived for some time in the house in which she grew up, reading her mother’s notes and books, trying desperately to learn more of what had happened and where her mother had vanished to. She began to explore the basics of her new power, the magical might granted to her by her mother’s deal. Lillith subsided on what meager coin her mother had left behind, and then by reluctantly selling off possessions and property. Eventually, three days after her eleventh birthday, she was at last forced to let go the house as well, to settle outstanding debts. The young girl found herself out on the streets. For some time she lived off the charity of temples, but always, sooner or later, her unsettling eyes and the feeling of wrongness that sometimes hung about her left others reluctant to help her. Eventually, unwilling to resort to thievery, she disguised herself as a cloaked and hooded elven wizard and joined with a trade company to act as caravan security. And so Lillith found herself out travelling the world, all the while developing her ever-growing talents.
Years passed, with all sorts of whacky adventures and perilous threats, cheerful moments and wrenching depressions. She found employment at varying occupations and locations, but in the end the eventual discovery of what she was resulted in her getting fired at best or run out of town by angry mobs at worst. She came into her Hellfire Pact in a situation that would be best left for another time, and continued to research and study her own abilities. Then, one day along the Coast, the now-grown Lillith hears word of a place called Candlekeep, where knowledge seekers are welcome regardless of what path in life they have chosen. This is where the story of her childhood ends, and the story of her life along the Sword Coast truly begins…
Goals:
Learn Dark Speech, rescue mother, break Pact(s), own a nice underground lair or island stronghold (somewhere tropical), write books, banish Fiends, control the population of warlocks. She is convinced that to free her mother from service to the Hells she must ensure that the family bloodline ends with her, thus causing the terms of the Pact to be fulfilled.
Plot Hooks:
Her mother might re-appear somewhere, possibly as a victim (as Lillith imagines her) or possibly as a willing participant in eeevil.
She might discover that she has unknown siblings, and thus have to re-evaluate her plans to rescue her mother (or kill the siblings, causing her to be totally evil, which devils might surely appreciate).
Witch hunters might try to kill her!
She always is willing and even eager to hunt devils, demons, and cultists, perhaps to the point where she could be lured into a trap.
She could go crazy(er) from the dark lore she is constantly researching.
She would eagerly investigate anything that might get her closer to learning Dark Speech.
