Roleplaying slavery on the surface

I've been told conflicting things and I am pretty sure it is A-OK in the underdark. On the surface is another matter. I was told by a few server veterans that it's against the rules for PC's to roleplay slave / slave master relationships on the surface. On the other hand, I've had just as many tell me it's fine to do so in the surface realms. I'm not role playing slavemaster or slave myself, i'm just wondering if it's legal or not.

There is no rule perse but often this type of RP tends to be the gateway for breaking of a few rules. Mostly the rules that thread on ERP and Griefing or metagaming.

You might wonder how can this form of RP lead to Rule breaking:

1. Playing dominance/subservience roles to other individual PC or groups of PCs means that there many "norms" of social behavior can be broken or bypassed since the "master" of said individual has the right to treat the slave as property rather than senient being. This can be abusive, either sexually, physically, and verbally to a degree where it gets disturbing and spoils the fun for all involved. There is a fine line to thread and if you are not careful or show restraint it is the quickest way to be handed down consequences by the staff due to complaints levied against your abusive RP even if IC.

2. Griefing - Again, playing a subserviant role can lead to all sorts of issues that may be considered causing grief for the individual. It can also lead to situations in which confrontation of such roles turns aggressive and violent, and without permanent resolution... a constant player vs player issue that cannot be resolved without one or more party being permanently removed from the scenario or the RP environment either OOCly or ICly.

3. Metagaming - Many times the intimate relationship between master and slave can turn sour for OOC or IC reason. To a degree in which one of the parties involved feel that is in their right to divulge "secret" or "unknown" facts about their previous partner, often times to the detriment of the other. Often times this is done because of an OOC vendetta and guised as an IC way to screw someone over that you no longer get along with. Such divulgence of information maybe construed as meta-knowledge being filtered out to the public so that either party makes it nearly impossible for the other to play their character effectively any longer.

So again, slavery is permissible in CERTAIN areas of the server, in the vicinity of Baldur's gate it is highly illegal to be slaver. As for Sshamath, the City has a caveat which filters races that are enslavable and not. The only requirement is if the individual is capable or LEARNING MAGIC not innately gifted in magic, but able to learn some degree of magic and is able to be a race capable of attaining "Wizard" progression.

For instance, orcs can be slaves but the orc who can learn and wield magic can be emancipated by the Sshamathian authorities from his slave status if he/she deems it so despite their master's disapproval. Under no circumstance (other than voluntary servitude /slavery or concealment of such acts) can a wizard or a budding arcanist be held as a slave against their will within Sshamath.
