A gentle midnight breeze tosses the linen curtains of the Elf Song’s cheapest room, barely a six-foot-long closet with a tiny cot for a bed. Strewn across it’s linen sheets lay a backpack full of assorted tools and potions, and a simple grey hood tossed haphazardly among them. Propped in the corner sat a lonely crossbow, the words “Mister Shooty” roughly etched in it’s oaken grip.

A young girl sat huddled over blank pages, biting her lower lip gingerly as her quill gently scratched across the rough-pulp parchment, illuminated by the flickering candle set upon the floor.

Today was the first day I found myself in the vast city of Baldur’s Gate. It’s even bigger than mother told me! I used to hear stories of cities this huge, a hundred times bigger than Raven’s Hill, but until I saw it with my own two eyes, I couldn’t completely imagine it. There are so many people here too. I’ve seen elves, and dwarves, and races I don’t even have names for yet. I even saw an armored Orc, though, he was friendly. Well, he was more of a jerk. He was only “friendly” in the sense that he wasn’t trying to brain me, and for an Orc that’s pretty friendly.

People have been so helpful, not at all like you usually hear about from stories of the big city. I met a weapon smith named Maltz, who gave me a job! It’s only one delivery, but I know if I do it well I can find more work. I met a powerful priestess called Lilly; she was able to strike down kobolds with her bare hands. She called herself a “Sacred Fist”, which makes a lot of sense. Must read further on this.

Tomorrow I make the journey to Beregost for Mister Maltz. Despite the wonders of the big city, my feet long to feel the open road beneath them again.
A faint smile crossed her lips as she penned the final words. She let the quill linger on the page for a long moment before drawing it away, her cheeks already warmed by tomorrow’s sunrise.
