Elbereth has also been known to carry a war hammer, rapier and dagger at different times. She also bears many scrolls and wands to enhance her natural magical abilities.
Background: Elbereth was born to a lesser noble house in Szith, the only drow city on a distant isle. In her 32nd year, Elbereth's parents disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Many believed she had killed them, though it was never proven. Due to her seeming natural talent for casting divine spells, Elbereth was admitted into Arach Tinlith, the temple academy of Szith, at an early age. She rose above her rivals quickly, displaying talents that caused many to hate her and desire her death.
It was during her lessons at Arach Tinilith that Elbereth was taught to craft the whip she favors, including how to bind the souls of imps to the heads. Whilst not very intelligent, the whip-snakes provided her with guidance and had some arcane senses which came in handy for detecting poisons and magical traps which Elbereth may not have otherwise detected. As with all females of the temple academy, Elbereth learned to ignore physical and mental pain, a lesson which proved highly difficult for her considering her low constitution.
As part of her training Elbereth was sent to the Sorcere and Melee Magthere, the academies of arcane magic and warriors. The rules of Szith's academies stated that every student must train in all three disciplines, whether they would use the skills there or not. From the melee magthere Elbereth learned to fight with a greater array of weapons than many of her sister priestesses; lessons of the Sorcere were mostly forgotten, Elbereth only remembered how certain arcane spells work and the weaknesses of mages.
One of her "classes" led Elbereth to the Realm Above to abduct a surfacer for sacrifice to Lolth. During her journey to the surface, Elbereth ran afoul of Eilistraeeans, one of which was skilled with the use of a bow. Elbereth managed to escape the hunters, though not without injury: she was pierced twice in the abdomen by arrows, the scars she kept to remind herself ever after of the Moon Dancers. Elbereth refused to accept failure, choosing to hide and wait for her wounds to heal. After many weeks, she felt ready to try again, this time succeeding in capturing a human. Screaming and kicking, the human was dragged to the altar of Lolth and Elbereth was made to torture him until he died by loss of blood.
The next time Elbereth came across a human, she was highly arrogant. The man bore a shield with the symbol of Torm upon it, though she didn't recognise it. The two did battle and Elbereth felt the fury of the knight, his greatsword slicing down her back. The knight showed her mercy, however, and allowed her to crawl away - though not before he carved the symbol of Torm into her armor.
Feeling disgraced, Elbereth had the armor destroyed so none could identify it as hers. Her hatred of surfacers grew as she was forced to retreat to the Underdark in only her undergarments. It was in a neutral town on the borders of the Underdark that Elbereth bought herself new armor to wear back to Szith. The scar which resulted from her wounds ran from her right shoulder, down her spine to the small of her back. Elbereth chose to keep this scar as well, to remember the debt that she would repay.
As she grew, Elbereth stayed within Szith, facing greater threats from her rivals in Arach Tinilith. At the age of 100, Elbereth commanded powers similar to many who were double her age. One such rival, from Elbereth's own house, attempted to assassinate her during her 121st year. Elbereth proved to be the stronger of the pair, killing her cousin, the fifth daughter of the matron.
A result of the fight was the matron of her house sending Elbereth to the city ruled by mages, Sshamath. The matron called it Elbereth's "punishment" for murder.
The drow of Szith knew Sshamath as a city devoid of Lolth. Many believed Elbereth would die either on the journey to Sshamath, or not long after her arrival. However Elbereth sees her time in Sshamath as merely a test of her abilities and devotion to the Spider Queen. A test she fully intends to pass . . .
Goals: Much like every other drow, Elbereth's goal is to increase her status and power. She aims to become matron mother of her own house and subsequently raise its status. Elbereth also dreams of one day bearing the ultimate gift from Lolth: a draegloth offspring. As a priestess of Lolth she aims to serve the Spider Queen however she can.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: Elbereth murdered the arcane archer known as Silinrul Linthuloh after being angered by her sarcasm. Elbereth claimed the books which Silinrul had written, learning much of Sshamath's surroundings and inhabitants. Due to her past journeys to the surface, Elbereth feels she owes a debt of pain to those who dwell in the Realm Above. Especially the knight and Eilistraeeans who had injured her. Only once these debts are repaid will she truly heal herself and remove the scars. It is possible, if not likely, that Elbereth's matron or her rivals from Szith would attempt to have her assassinated in order to remove the threat she poses to them. After all, they would not wait patiently for her to gain more power.
