Amaer Kellen (reworked)
Posted: Sat Mar 09, 2013 11:20 am
First Name: Amaer (ah-mare)
Last Name: Kellen (kel-len)
Appearance:
Race: Half (moon) elf
Age: 24
Height 5ft 1in
Weight: 120 lbs
Eyes: Emerald green, bright and rather elven looking
Hair: Auburn, messy
Facial Hair Style: Only a fine covering of stubble which he rarely has to shave.
Personality Profile:
Amaer is generally polite, charming and eager to please, (Base Cha. 14), and very rarely given to anger. He is intelligent (Base Int. 16, increasing on lvl up, Able Learner feat) and delights in learning, though his chaotic nature makes it difficult for him to study diligently without being distracted by another fascinating topic.
Generally rather trusting and gullible, he assumes the best of people and is often surprised when they turn out to be wicked or untrustworthy. The problem is exacerbated if the other person is attractive. (Base Wis. 8, no ranks in Sense Motive). In the past, this has led him into undertaking dishonest pursuits. He also tends not to pay much attention to his surroundings, tending to daydream rather than keeping an eye or ear out for potential danger.
Due to recent events owing to his association with the Mirari, Amaer is much braver than he once was, though he would still prefer to read about a great battle or quest than actually participate in one.
General Health:
Due to his slight build and elven heritage, Amaer favours agility over brute strength (Base Str. 10). While sometimes a little clumsy, especially when embarrassed, he is usually rather skilful (Base Dex. 16). Despite his skinny frame, he has fairly decent physical endurance (Base Con. 12) as he spent a large chunk of his early life running away from guards, angry merchants and the like.
Deity: Tymora - while not overtly religious, he evokes her blessing fairly often. Also occasionally gives thanks to Mystra when a spell goes well.
Initial Alignment: Chaotic Good
Profession: (Ex-)Thief, Wannabe minstrel/author/scholar/magician depending on his preference on the day.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Rog4/Wiz6/AT10/ASOC10
Habits/Hobbies: Amaer's primary focus as a young man was to be a great bard, like his mother (who was not really a "great bard") - he still holds delusions of musical talent, and is given to composing (mostly terrible) songs about his comrades and their "heroic exploits." Apart from this, he has a great interest in magic, the Art and magical beasts and monsters. He is exceptionally keen on acquiring magical tomes, even willing to do so dishonestly if a less nefarious approach has already failed.
Languages: Common, Illuskan, Cormanthan. Has a book-learned basic knowledge of Elven (he can identify the language being spoken and understand simple words and phrases. His spoken Elven is very poor). He also has some familiarity with the thieves' lingo, Cant.
Weapon of Choice: He is moderately talented with a bow, taught by one of Mother's many lovers as a boy. If he must defend himself in melee, he carries a rapier, though his hand to hand combat training was intended for the stage, not the battlefield.
Background:
Amaer's mother, Jura Kellern was (and may still be) the resident two-copper bard at the seedy Jaded Unicorn tavern in Scornubel. Infamous as the only inn in the Caravan City to accept orc and half-orc "guests", the Jaded Unicorn is also frequented by many less savage, but just as unsavoury characters.
One such individual was an evil moon elven mage of adventuring stock, who had a brief dalliance with the attractive female bard one night after the bar had closed. The sorcerer had long-gone by the time that Jura became aware she was with child, but she was delighted to be carrying a baby who may have the blood of the Fair Folk.
Amaer was born on Kythorn 12, 1325DR - The Year of Great Harvests. His delighted mother named him the Elven word for "Beautiful Song," hoping that he would possess a great talent for music due to his elven heritage.
Jura filled little Amaer's head with tales of adventure and songs of great heroes, dragons and monsters, though she became increasingly concerned that he showed no musical aptitude himself. "Perhaps he will come into it when he is older" she told herself.
When she became romantically entwined with a wandering ranger five or six years later, she convinced the man to show her son how to use a bow, and he soon developed some talent with one.
By the time Amaer was sixteen years old, however, the ranger had long gone, and Jura had replaced him with the leader of a band of travelling actors, who the young half elf idolised. For a while, he dreamed of joining the troupe himself, learning acrobatics and stage-fighting from his mother's lover and how to supplement the travelling actor's meagre income by picking the pockets of spectators from his less honest compatriots.
Meanwhile, the Jaded Unicorn's innkeep set him to work cleaning rooms and running errands, often including playing harmful pranks on his more scrupulous business rivals - sneaking into their kitchens to put choking powder in the stew being a particular favourite.
With time, Jura lost interest in the actor's charms as she had become fascinated with the petty criminal Saithe Darley, who somehow always remained one step ahead of Scornubel's Red Shields. Embarking on a passionate, if heated affair with the boy's mother, the thief took Amaer on as a sort of apprentice, taking advantage of his nimble fingers and suggestible nature.
Young Amaer enjoyed the challenge of unpicking locks, disabling traps and remaining unseen, though his tendency to daydream put him in harm's way more than once and a breathless flight through the Caravan City soon followed. When escape was not an option, his quick wits and natural charm nearly always got him out of trouble.
Not long after his twenty-first birthday, Amaer found himself in a situation he could not talk his way out of, and a massive half-orc had cornered him in an alleyway, furious that the half-elf had attempted to steal his coinpurse. As the brutish humanoid raised his club, Amaer almost unconsciously spoke the words to a magic spell that placed his attacker in a magical daze, allowing him to make a hasty escape.
Unknowingly, he had inherited some power from his sorcerer father, though he was unable to replicate the spell in less stressful conditions. He became fascinated by magic and The Art, trying to learn as much as he could to try to reawaken the dormant power he seemed to possess, but never succeeding.
Three more years passed, and Darley had trained Amaer to be a passable thief. The older rogue's latest plot was to steal back some magical jewellery he had fenced to Angah Lalla before knowing its true value. Sneaking into Angah's shop in the dead of night, the pair prowled through the dingy maze of shelves, careful not to touch anything for fear of the magical wards the sly merchant was known to use.
Locating the strongbox that contained his prize, Darley instructed Amaer to keep watch while he searched for traps, and Amaer did so - for a few minutes at least. His mind wandering, and thinking of magic, he noticed a book of pressed faerie dragons on a high bookshelf not far from Darley, and unthinkingly reached out for it.
The magical trap threw the half-elf off his feet, but ensnared the older thief in a semi-translucent magical force sphere. Amaer squealed and ran as a magical alarm screamed through the shop, leaping out before he could be caught by the mysterious shopkeeper.
Dreading what his mother would say when she found out that her lover had been captured as a result of his foolishness, Amaer decided he must leave Scornubel. Perhaps he could hide in the crowds of Waterdeep, or Cormyr, or Amn... He quietly sneaked into the Jaded Unicorn, took all his possessions that he could carry, and hurried to the docks. With it being so late, only one slow river boat was present, headed along the Chionthar to Baldur's Gate.
Amaer hastily paid the captain to take him along, though they ditched him on the south bank of the river a few nights later after he insisted on "entertaining" the crew with his songs.
Resigned to continue the journey on foot, he carefully crept along the riverbank, avoiding any monsters from the Wood of Sharp Teeth to the south. Before too long, he heard a faint moan emanating from the undergrowth. Cautiously approaching, he found an injured mage, Herran, who had been wounded killing a mob of humanoid bandits. Using strips from the wizard's robe, he was able to clumsily stem the flow of blood from his wounds, and he offered to help the old mage make it to the safety of the Gate.
On the way, they were ambushed by gnolls, who were about to kill Amaer when Herran used the last of his failing strength to unleash a magical onslaught, destroying the monsters.
The wizard bequeathed his spellbook to the quick-witted Amaer as thanks for his help, before passing away. Since safely arriving in Baldur's Gate a tenday later, Amaer has been attempting to decipher the spells, through trial and error rather than skill.
While telling some of Mother's tales to entertain the populace of Baldur's Gate (and hopefully earn a few coins), Amaer instead attracted the attention of the Mirari, who he has now been initiated to. He has also been seen performing some minor tasks for the shrewd hin merchant Mossy, and attempting to curry favour with the monster hunter sometimes known as the Purple Rose.
Goals:
To uncover great mysteries of the Sword Coast with the Mirari
To become a great bard (impossible, given his lack of talent)
To become a great wizard (well, this is a possibility, at least...)
To make a fortune, possibly by putting Mother's tales of adventure into print.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Amaer's father is unaware of his existence as of now, but he is a powerful sorcerer (and blood magus, possibly) and may wish to make use of his son's blood if he were to discover him.
Saith Darley is also still alive and a nasty piece of work - more so as he believes he was double-crossed...
Apart from this, Amaer's eagerness to dabble in magic he doesn't understand and lack of common sense would make him the ideal person to unwittingly unleash any manner of arcane horror that could threaten the Sword Coast.
Amaer's familiar, Lianthe (Elven - "Spider"), used to be a tiny monstrous spider that started following him after the Wood of Sharp Teeth. A bungled polymorph spell has left the spider stuck in rabbit form, though it still hungers after butterflies and chitters like a spider.
