Background:
Born into a well-to-do merchant family - the Court-Manteaus of Esmeltaran in Amn - much of Dangereuse's youth was spent in comfortable circumstances. Far from being the little princess that her parents wished for, from early childhood 'Rose' displayed a predisposition to rebellious moodiness. Soon after her mother's death in childbirth, during her adolescence, Rose's father decided to remarry. To please his young wife, the Court-Manteau patriarch decided to send his two children, Rose and her younger brother Rogier, away to "finish their schooling and gain a foothold in the world". Rogier was sent to Athkatla to live with his uncle, Henri, under whose tutelage he was to become a trader; Rose, considered something of a problem child, in turn was packed off to a nearby chapter house of the Order of the Hin Fist to learn discipline and self-control. Though Rose managed to get good at 'hiding' her moodiness she was far from cured of bursts of hypomania. Teased by the other students and nicknamed 'Danger Mouse', Rose found some release for her pent up energy in perfecting her physical skills and, when possible, allowing her mind to wander on flights of fancy. Even so, she regularly got into scrapes with the other disciples to which their bruised egos and faces frequently bore witness. As the day of her affirmation approached, to the relief of all concerned including Rose, the head of the order concluded that she was far too willful and questioned authority far too much to be suitable for life in a monastery or, for that matter, to actually become a Hin Fist.
It was thus that Rose found herself on the road to Athkatla shortly after her nineteenth birthday. Having been in a monastery for half a decade had left her ill-prepared for either the wonders and splendor or the squalor, crime, and poverty of a metropolis like the City of Coin. Comfortable and in reasonably good repair Henri Beauclerc's house stood near the waterfront in the crowded and poorly maintained halfling enclave of the city's bridge district. Good with numbers and usually shrewd in his business dealings the tightfisted trader had come under the scrutiny of the local Shadow Thief guildmaster in the months immediately subsequent to Rose's arrival because of his efforts to shortchange the guild's longshoreman operations. Rogier, having lived with the wily old rascal for a number of years, knew better than to pay the old Hin's complaints much heed. Rose, on the other hand, took the injustice of the situation personally and decided to intervene. After witnessing the second class treatment received by halflings from the humans of Athkatla, Rose's indignation was raised to a high pitch at the unfairness of her family's predicament. Cautioned by her brother against taking any provocative action that may result in a violent altercation that they had no chance of winning, Rose was, at length, convinced to allow their uncle to resolve the matter. In truth, Henri would have been glad to pay restitution to the guild but he was forced to play for time as all of his ready capital was tied up in a commercial venture to Lantan the return of which was much delayed due to the early onset of seasonal storms. After the Shadow Thieves decided to send a message by having a couple of goons pay a visit to the offices of Beauclerc Traders, Rose, donning hood and mask, sprang into action.
Over the previous weeks she had dealt with the boredom of daily accounting lessons by prowling the streets and rooftops of the bridge district at night. She found the exercise exhilarating and over time she got a good view of the Shadow Thieves' operations. She noted the comings and goings of thugs, money collectors and pimps; she learned courier routes and the trail of money. Most of all she saw how the guild thrived on vice, exploitation, and extortion. Rose began her career as a vigilante by intercepting couriers at the end of their routes, stunning them before they had a chance to note their attacker, and then making off with their full bags. She then 'donated' the gold thus obtained at various shrines operated by the clergy of Yondalla, Cyrrollalee, and Arvoreen. Alas Rose's stint as an urban Robin Hood would prove quite short-lived. The guild reacted quickly to the attacks on its couriers by keeping a high profile presence on the streets as well as offering a sizeable bounty for information leading to the capture of the masked halfling vigilante who was disrupting the district's 'business life'. Informants were not hard to find and only Rogier's quick wit in surmising that that the vigilante may be his sister saved the day. He immediately confronted Rose regarding the matter and when the latter confirmed his fears he alerted his uncle to the threat and by the time the agents of the guild surrounded the house the three of them were already onboard a ship bound for Murann. With his house and business seized by the Shadow Thieves, an embittered Henri would sail on to Lantan to see if anything from his holdings there might prove salvageable. Unsure whether the guild would choose to pursue them, Rose and Rogier travelled north with a Tethyrian caravan bound for Waterdeep. Barely eluding Shadow Thief agents on the lookout for them in Crimmor answered their question: the guild would neither forgive nor forget. They also learned in the caravan city that the Shadow Thieves extorted most of the Court-Manteau fortune from their father to pay for Rose's 'crimes'. The dispirited siblings fled north from Amn, eventually settling in Waterdeep under new identities. Rose settled on the name 'Danger' that was once used to mock her in the monastery.
After spending two years in the City of Splendors, Danger, having regained much of her confidence and sense for adventure, has now moved south to Baldur's Gate. She has done so primarily to be closer to Amn but also to start a new life with a more prominent role among the Hin people of the region.
Goals:
To make restitution to her father for the loss of his fortune.
To oppose and disrupt operations of the Shadow Thieves wherever and whenever she can.
To protect Hin as much as she can from predation and exploitation by any and all.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Danger's sense of justice will not allow her to rest where the Shadow Thieves are involved. Though she will fastidiously protect her new identity and seeks to keep a low profile, she will exert herself to oppose Shadow Thief plots and operations. If Shadow Thieves were to seek her or her brother in the area she would use whatever was at hand to foil them and, if necessary, eliminate them.
While not inclined to a life of crime Danger lives by her own code and will do what is necessary to protect those she loves and Hin people in general.
Very tall for their race the Court-Manteau's have proudly proclaimed their family being of Tallfellow extraction (with a distant elven heritage). While there may or may not be any truth to this boast, Danger cares little about its veracity and very much identifies with being Hin and in protecting 'her' people.
