Background:

Assad was born in Calimport to a couple named Tariq and Tahir. They worked as slave-servants for a wealthy man named Youssef Qur’esh. They were a poor family with no valuables. His parents were worshipers of Ilmater and Assad grew up learning about the Broken God.

When Assad was five years old, a wealthy merchant from out of town took notice of the small family. A price was offered that Youssef could not refuse, and the small family was sold from one master to another. Their new home was far to the east. The long and arduous journey proved too much for Assad’s mother, who became sick on the journey and died.

Every night Tariq would pour out his hear to Ilmater for strength. As Assad grew he began to work alongside his father, who seemed content with their station in life, relying on The One Who Endures for solace.

Abruptly one night, Assad’s father was murdered for worshiping Ilmater. Assad wondered if the same fate waited for him, so he fled. The life of freedom presented many options to him. He decided he wanted to become a powerful merchant himself, so he began collecting many valuable items...

Assad goes by the name Youssef because in his mind, that is a good name for a powerful merchant, since that was the name of his master when he was a young boy in Calimshan.
