-----Chapter 1------

Survival

The rain fell like drops of sorrow, pounding down into the mud and grass surrounding the house. Delade and her partner stepped through the ajar door and took a look at the carnage inside. The mother and daughter tied to the beds, the bruising on their wrists showing that they struggled for hours before they were finally killed by having the words "Jason Flask Lay here" carved into their stomachs. The husband sat in a chair with his eyes staring blankly towards the occupied beds, a longsword sticking out of his chest. The fathers dead eyes having been opened, forced to watch the defilement and murder of his daughter and wife. Delade hadn't seen many murders this gruesome, and all of the ones she had seen were the result of monsters on the road.

Delade had no talent for investigation, she had hired on as a sword to defend the town against the trolls of the Silver Marshes but everyone was expected to pull their weight so Delade got assigned to partner with one of the young Investigators named Ian Dowsing. He was smart and quick to notice the little things like the tread of a boot print, the displacement of dust, the scent of a cigar that was out of place due to none of the family having been smokers.

"This self named Jason Flask is quite a swordsman Delade, the way he walks tells us this due to the balance of his feet... also a smoker of Cigars i wager by the smell, quite an unusual scent, he added cinnamon to the tobacco I'd say but i think the most important thing to realize is... he was not alone in this.... the longsword left in the mans chest was a crude strike and the blade was left in the body, suggesting that the man using it didn't care about swords... or got too busy to retrieve it but a good swordsman always knows where his sword is as you've told me often... which brings us to the next point two women tied to beds.... he'd have needed someone to tie them up while he made sure they couldn't escape..."

"How do you know that Jason was the smoker Ian? couldn't his accomplice be the one with a love of Cigars?" Delade looked around the room she couldn't even see a hint of a clue, but Ian was usually right about such things... he was studying to become a mage and had a love for investigation.

"The scent of the Cigar is stronger near the bodies and there are ashes from it on the bed, the accomplice would have taken his turn first and it is unlikely that either of them would have had a lit cigar while killing a man and tying two resisting women up, And the Carvings, they seem almost ritualistic in a way as if he were marking his kills, taunting people to stop him." Ian responded while sifting around the house looking for whatever it is he expected to find.

Del grimaced at the words, but knew them to be true. Ian must have caught the look on her face in that second because he smirked that silly grin of his up at her "Don't worry Del, We'll get them both, its just a matter of finding the right clues to lead us to the right people..."

Finding the Clues and deducing what happened based on clues left behind at a crime scene was Ian's specialty, Del was just there to protect Ian who had little combat experience and to Intimidate suspects into talking. They had a working partnership and had solved a great many crimes thanks to the pairing.

"Well Del... looks like no more clues about our Jason Flask... but the sword should help us locate his associate, it was made here in town, and the handle has the smell of alcohol on it, suggests one of our killers an alcoholic... likely why he forgot his blade... stabbed the man, and then got distracted trying to catch the women who undoubtedly tried to flee... both were stopped by the two men but sword lay forgotten." Ian walked to the door and nodded to Delade "of course if your an alcoholic and just committed this crime... where would you go? to get a drink of course...." and with that Ian was out the door heading towards the tavern not even making sure Delade would follow.

As they walked down the road towards the main part of the village the rain didn't let up at all. a dismal grey downpour that went well with a triple murder, as if the sun couldn't bear to see the horrors of mortals below. They ducked under the eves and entered the tavern. It smelled of spilled ale and roasting beef and sounded of farmers and merchants unwinding after a long day's work. The bar held a number of people around it and tables were crowded around by the men and women of the village, a number of them stood out to Delade. There were four by the bar that often got unruly after drinking their day's earning Delade had to toss them in the jail for brawling.

Ian poked around inspecting people here and there until he got to the bar, finally he came up to one of the men Delade had noticed by the bar "My good man it seems you have lost your longsword... and is that blood i see staining your sleeve? you also seem to have come across some extra money... so tell me... where is Jason?" As Ian said this the man looked dumbfounded at him for a few seconds before swinging a punch at Ian, missing of course and clocking the man sitting in the stool to the right. That's when the bar obviously became a brawl. Ian for all his ineptitude at combat was however great at avoiding fists and getting clear of the scuffle, Delade however waded right into the middle of it. Drunken farmhands and workers aren't much of a match against her training... also the fact that she was wearing heavy gauntlets helped subdue the bar quickly.

It didn't take long to discover the man they were after tried to escape out the back door only to be held up by a group of adventurers who saw the exchange and decided to lend a hand to the local law. Ian had wandered over and manacled the unconscious man as Delade carried the other brawlers over her shoulder as they headed to the barracks.

The man Ian had pointed out as the accomplice sat quietly in the Interrogation room, his name was Nathon Desmon a farmer who had moved to Nesme within the past year. He had always seemed to keep to himself a bit except when it came to the bar, always quick to start a brawl eager for blood. He was sitting down at a table as Delade walked into the room.

"I've seen a particularly nasty bit of you and your friends handiwork today at the old Mc'lan Farm Nathon, then i went on to get punched a good number of times breaking up a fight that you started. I am not in a happy mood right now and you are the only focus i have for my unhappiness... i think its in your best interest to tell me what you know of this Jason before i lose what self control i have." Delade sat in the chair across from Nathon scowling at him.

"you guards think your so tough, think you can just walk through the door sit down and get us to talk..." Nathon leand forward putting his hands on the table and grinning "I drink with people worse than you."

Delade looked at Nathon for a second and then suddenly slams her fist down on one of Nathons hands shattering bone with her gauntlet as she looks at him "I'm in no mood to play games Nathon and you were reported found during a bar fight... its so easy to break your hands throwing a punch at someone isn't it? shall we see just how easy it is to have ribs broken getting hit with a bar stool?"

Nathon took a sharp intake of breath to exclaim about his pain but as he heard the rest of her threat he balked. "He's a skilled man your after... " Nathon pauses to wince and cradle his broken hand "and able to call people to him that aren't afraid of spilling a little blood... even enjoy the bloodshed. The job was simple i take out the man we have our fun and he leaves his message then we split up and meet up at the graveyard at midnight... he has plans to move towards the west to the Sword coast and he had invited me along."

Delade grins a bit at the easy confession and stands up "you know you should really get that hand looked at. it might be broken, you did hit that other man really hard." and with that she left the room, looking for her partner to fill him in on what she learned.

============================================================================

The rain had passed by but the clouds still covered the sky, nighttime had fallen however so the grey turned to near darkness, Ian had trouble seeing in the dark but Delade being an elf was privy to the nights secrets. The villagers had a rumor about this graveyard especially the ancient mausoleum, said that a dark power rests there and one day it will awaken. A couple of clerics and paladins had attempted to investigate this rumor but often were found dead due to passages that had collapsed or traps to keep people from robbing the dead.

Ian and Delade weren't here for the mausoleum however, their target was the man leaning against the side of the stone building smoking a cigar and waiting, his longsword leaning against the wall beside him. He let out a smoke circle before speaking "Well well, it seems the annoying inspector and his watchdog followed the trail of breadcrumbs, good for you." as he spoke he pushed away from the wall, picking up his longsword and resting it on his shoulder, and putting his hand on the shortsword sheathed at his hip.

"Jason Flask your under arrest for the murder of Jessica and Sara Mc'lan as well as the defilement of their bodies. Resist and we will be forced to take hostile actions" Ian loved saying this part it made him feel like he was in control of the situation, and often he was... but this time things were different, Delade's scimitars were out already so she was prepared for the first attack, her blade blocked the sword aiming for Ians neck and she twisted pulling the sword back towards her.

At this Jason Flask just smiled and began an attack upon Delade, two scimitars against a longsword and shortsword. Jason taunting her all the while "Ah yes.... i had heard about you elf. the best swordsman on the watch in this town quite an accomplishment, your footwork is masterful and your technique is inspired but you are just a girl playing at being something more...." At this point Ian drew his own shortwords and leap in to help fight Jason, but Jason was ready for Ian to leap in. "ah leaping to her defense, your worse than she is Inspector!" it was a split second but Delade had realized her mistake. Jason had positions Ian too close to her and with the slightest deflection of her scimitar her blade slid into Ians chest.

The look in Ians Eyes was a look of shock, seeing his partner and guardian at the end of the sword killing him, eyes that could only ask "how could you?" to Delade. those eyes were her downfall as well... as soon as she saw them she froze. unable to react until she felt the longsword enter her stomach. "you had such great potential Elf. you just lacked the experience needed to beat me..." she could hear Jason's laugh as she fell forward over the longsword. "perhaps you'll yet get it... if you survive our little encounter look for me... I'm planning a great party over on the Sword Coast. Oh and good job killing your partner, it seems your inexperience doesn't just hurt you but those around you too."

She felt the longsword pull out of her stomach and she fell to her knees... scimitars falling out of numb hands as her vision blurred. she could barely make out Jason walking away before she succumbed to blackness.
