Background:
Maurus Dismas is a "son of the Gate." Specifically, a child of the sewers and a former street urchin—his heritage unknown. But, from the moment of his earliest memory, he had felt as if he was a child of the natural world...albeit one that was living and breathing between and within the stonework that held Baldur's Gate together. The mysteries of life, of living—both good and bad—held his attention and sparked in him a feeling, nay power, that he could only assume was his own soul, empowering him, as he grew to manhood.
Maurus' childhood friends were the other lost children that managed to stay clear of the orphanage, or whom had parents that lived as simple merchants in the Wide but found refuge under ground in the sewers. And, of course, the rats. One in particular—whom he named Artimee—would begin to speak to him, and become, in time, his familiar.
One might think that such a strange upbringing of poverty and the unknown would have created a being socially challenged. Quite the contrary, actually, as Maurus Dismas exhibited a inner personal magnetism and force of personality...not to mention smooth skin and facial perfection that seemed almost elven (even though he was "certainly not!" as he would himself explain to anyone that suggested so). Many would say about Maurus that he had strength of personality...even if he himself exhibited chaotic behavior that led him to never excel at either feats of strength, dexterity or intelligence. In these, he was average or slightly better than average, and even though he might try to steal food or take work at the docks in order to feed his belly or the belly of others he might have the chance to feed, he could not focus enough to develop those abilities.
There was something else brewing in him...and it was the combination of a few events that put him onto the path of the adventurer.
The smaller beasts that survived within the city seemed to carry an intelligence, one that he himself felt pulled towards. In this attention to the detail of the ways of the beasts of the Gate, Maurus learned that there was a God who ruled over beasts that showed intelligence beyond normal expectation: the Unicorn Queen. It was not by some scholarly manner Maurus came to learn this, but instead, from an armored woman of great skill that was always willing to help the downtrodden. She was herself a renown Knight of the Unicorn, and was passionate in spreading the word of her faith in the Unicorn Queen. Maurus absorbed her words like they called to him in a magical language. He knew that even though he was born from the sewers, something awaited him in the wilderness outside the Gate. In time, he would find it...or it would find him....
The connection he felt to the beasts and those that exhibited odd intelligence, was only part of the combination to the rise of Maurus' adventurer life. It was also one fateful day—after many days of observing from the crowd—that Maurus was introduced to the Mirari, a group of street theater performers and arcanists. This day, as Maurus observed the Mirari control and manipulate illusions of the elements to illustrate their great narratives of mystery and knowledge, Maurus focused so intensely upon the casting of these simple street magics, that he learned to mimic the motions until he himself could create light from nothingness, bursts of flame to spark a fire...and, to cause energy to wash over a location or thing in which he could discern if the power of magic existed within or around it. Over time, it would be members of the Mirari that would give Maurus Dismas a name to the mystic energies he felt flowing from within him: the Weave. The Mirari opened their arms to Maurus, should he find their faction, their calling, his own.
The adventurer, Maurus Dismas, was born. What had only been an inner force and understanding of self could now be manipulated, understood, and practiced.
Maurus Dismas was not high-born (to his knowledge), but his spirit yearned to uncover itself via his developing, innate powers. He yearned to know more about everything—especially what the Mirari would say lay outside the walls of the Gate. And, he yearned to be like Balanta of the Knights of the Unicorn...although he had yet to find his inner nobility.
Fists steps are always the most difficult. Let us hope that Maurus Dismas can walk a league without trouble...or maybe even to the edges of the known realms....
Goals:
- To join the Mirari in person if not spirit, if his innate strength pushes him in that direction.
- To join the Knights of the Unicorn in person if not spirit, shall he find his way into the arms and guidance of Lurue.
- To locate the source of his inner strength, which seems to bring him close to the magical and intelligent beasts of the known world (his Fey Heritage giving link to such feelings).
- To wander freely upon the land as an unburdened soul.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
- "born of the sewers" is a saying he often employs. The Gate is his home, but not always the most pleasant of places, in his short memory and life.
- Torn between the aspects of nature and civilization, having unknown Fey Heritage but knowing the city as home.
- A sucker for charm, delight, beauty and joy...however, beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
