Race: Earth Genasi, a dark crystalline crust covers the surface of his skin and glistens slightly
Age: unknown, but young and still a little naive

Weight: unknown, but likely to stress rope bridges, and never seen riding a horse
Eyes: black crystals lit from within by a red glow
Hair: black crystals also cover his head, generally hidden beneath his ever present hood.
Personality Profile:
Umbral is a very naive soul, trusting, honest and loyal. He has little concept of 'good' or 'evil' and no cultural awareness against which to make judgments. As such, he treats all he meets equally, as potential friends, and allows their actions to define them.
The exception is Fire Genasi & Fire Elementals. They are anathema to his cult and he holds strongly to the conviction that they are deceitful, corrupt and twisted creatures worthy of nothing. This does not mean he will attack on sight, but will be constantly alert for their deceptions, and waiting to stick his blade deep in their elemental core.

Deity: Grumbar (though Umbral makes frequent reference to 'the Mother' who seems to be a manifestation of Grumbar, tied to the genasi society in which he was born)
Initial Alignment: that is for others to judge... he knows what motivates him.
Profession: Traveller, and Student. As he is newly arrived on the surface, Umbral seeks to explore this beautiful land under sun and stars... He makes few, if any, judgements on those he encounters, willing to learn from all, for all have some lesson to teach.
Base Class & Proposed Development: Fighter (though Umbral always seeks to restore his relationship with Grumbar, and over time that might manifest in his class skills)
Habits/Hobbies: Umbral adores meeting new friends. See him, stop to say hello, and he'll help you with whatever you are doing. Just share a little of your knowledge and he's happy.
Languages: Common and Terran (he often sings the songs of the stones; genasi poetry, for those who can understand.)
Weapon of Choice: Greatsword, sometimes combined with a Tower Shield
Background:
Umbral was born into a militant cult of 'pure' earth genasi, living in a series of isolated caverns deep within the Underdark. The caverns were home to an ancient earth elemental called The Mother, claiming to be an avatar of Grumbar, who was responsible for the elemental lineage of that community. In their introverted isolation, the cult held that they were the living guardians of Grumbar's power, and trained hard to defend The Mother from the advances of Drow, Deep Imaskari and other Underdark powers.
When he was born, Umbral's dark, almost black, crystalline skin, eyes and hair set him apart from the others, all of whom were a yellow/brown, so came his name and his isolation, even within that small community. He was seen as an infection, a blight of the Underdark despoiling the purity of their culture and bloodline. But rather than kill him (though they came close often) they abused him, mocked him, and directed the pent up passions of an isolated community at the weakest member.
In his early years, as a child, he accepted his position at the bottom of the small society, for he knew no better. But as adulthood came upon him, so too did a sense that he was being misused, that he warranted equal treatment and the chance to live as a full member of his world. He sought to become stronger, touger, harder than the others. To soak up more of their spite and their assaults, that they begin to recognise his strength. It only made them fear him more, and so one day under orders from The Mother, his family threw him out, injured and alone, into the sprawling stone corridors and caverns of the Underdark...
In time, he made it to the surface, and found himself near the farmlands just outside Baldur's Gate. Summoning all his courage he approached the city and just outside found the first of his new friends...
Goals:
Umbral had two overarching goals in life, though a third has been recently found:
1) Restore his relationship with Grumbar:
Though The Mother might be a perversion of Grumbar's church, and far from representative of the wider philosophy of Grumbar's worshippers, it is all Umbral knows. He prays fervently to Grumbar that the God might bless his actions and deeds, and slowly those prayers are being heard, and answered, as Umbral's elemental power grows. He hopes one day he will be able to return to The Mother to show her that he has gained the blessing of the God, and redeem himself in her eyes.
2) Return to his home in the Underdark as a welcomed member of his society:
This desire is slowly being undermined by the friends he is making on the surface. Increasingly Umbral wonders if he might make a good life for himself above ground. Though currently he is not clear how he might make a tangible difference here, as he feels he could do within his own society.)
3) Explore the surface, it's places and people:
Since his arrival on the surface he has become fascinated by the wide, open lands and the sheer scale of the world... so much larger and varied than the caverns in which he was born. He simply wishes to soak up and see as much of this beautiful land as possible.

- Umbral's inquisitive and trusting nature is sure to get him embroiled unwitlingly in a number of plots... may already be doing so in fact...
