Background: Born in the City of the Great Seal, Deep Imaskar, Qialei Maraaysaha was a naturally sickly and frail child who grew to loathe the inefficiency of physical activities, burying herself in magical studies and above all, stories. Of mighty warriors and cunning rogues, gods and outsiders.

Escapism through these tales of high adventure and great heroes became an obsession and after years of fixation, the outside world seemed far more appealing than being trapped within Deep Imaskar.

Passing beyond the Great Seal seeking to become akin to the magnificent figures that filled her imagination and favourite books alike, the Imaskari wizard's knowledge of the location of Deep Imaskar was removed from her mind as protocol demands.

Traversing through the Underdark was hardly the "high adventure" she'd expected, frail and easily tired, she struggled through the dark caves and tunnels alone. After being blind sighted by a particularly vicious kobold, the Imaskari found a sturdy-looking beetle nearby which she took as a familiar. It thrived in these inhospitable lands where she faltered and that contrast was intriguing.

Embittered and far from home, the wizard cast away the few memories of home she'd preserved and embraced the lesson of the beetle, toughen or die. Never truly capable of shedding the idealism and obsession of the tales of her youth, Qialei nevertheless was tainted by a helping of cynicism.

Coming into the city of Sshamath, astounded by the outlandish sights, smells and shapes that she'd read about in the yellowed pages of her books, it filled her with hope that hadn't been a fools errand after all. Now the Imaskari Wizard travels the Underdark and perhaps in time, the surface, striving to learn the lesson of the beetle and along the way find a truer calling.

Few thoughts of Deep Imaskar remain, to Qialei it was simply the womb of her true birth and a stepping stone to greater things. Disdaining a reminder of her former "weakness", the Deep Imaskari cast her own name aside, no longer "Qialei Maraaysaha" but "Driftwood" floating (metaphorically, of course) upon the seas she's never seen.

"A grand boat, battered by the wrath of Umberlee's tides might be shattered and reduced to nothing. Humble and lowly, driftwood endures and if the seas are merciful, might find land once more."

Goals: To find "high adventure", to learn and to overcome her natural frailty, learning the lesson of the beetle. To find a god who's teachings she can "get behind", so to speak. Whether the answers she receives lead her down a darker path or not are yet to be seen.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:

Despite her obsession with high adventure and "toughening up", Driftwood loathes participating directly in combat, physical and melee combat above all.

Driftwood has a love of manufacturing magical weapons and armour and learning from examples that have come before. The properties, however useful or useless are quite intriguing.

Learning is a large focus for Driftwood, who doesn't categorize knowledge into "good" or "evil". Knowledge is knowledge and worthy of study. The wizard seeks eagery to learn new spells and lore from the various scrolls, tablets and books she finds in her travels. Delving into ruins specifically to find them.

Necromancy and the undead in particular have a fixation for Driftwood, although she's apprehensive about both. The notion of "conquering death" appeals, but the negative light necromancers have been shown in, in her tales leaves her wary.

The Imaskari is quite cowardly and prone to fear due to her own experience and natural frailty. The illithid in particular hold a certain terror for her, she doesn't want to become a mindslave!

Theology and the gods are fascinating for the wizard, along with their faithful. Although faithless, she'd like to learn more about the gods, their tenets and domains and eventually convert.

Driftwood would love to meet others from different races and professions, many having been a focus in the books she read growing up.

In time, Driftwood would like to see the surface and it's contrast to the Underdark. The sea in particular as befitting her new chosen name.

(Apologies if this wasn't up to scratch, I'll rewrite if necessary so critique me hard, please!)
