Background: Valgimmer was born and raised in Thay. He lived in Tyranturos, and was born into a family with old ties to the Mulan. They mostly are crafters of magical items and deal in trade. Valgimmer was schooled and educated with the intent of becoming a Red Wizard according to his family's wishes. He learned some lore and a couple languages. His education included the theology of Kossuth, which fascinated him. His studies were rigorous and detailed.

During many times in his life he was often picked on by other students do to his otherly characteristics, which he was supposed to try to keep hidden. Ultimately, Valgimmer was a failure in the arcane arts and a great disappointment to his family. Eventually, his family arranged a way to get rid of him or rather have him replaced to save face.

After years of abuse and mistreatment from family and peers Valgimmer turned from a caring and helpful man into a twisted and power hungry monster. With that in mind, his family arranged for him to go on an expedition so that he could supposedly obtain an item of arcane power that would give him great knowledge and power. So, a couple of novice wizards were hired to take Valgimmer into the Sunrise Mountains to find this item of power. Upon his arrival to the mountains, they began a long climb and a long time later he was instructed to go alone to find an old cave. Unknown to him, the wizards there used magic to cause rocks to fall across his return path and keep him trapped in the mountains where he was to be left for dead.

While in the mountains, Valgimmer did find a cave. He realized that he was in trouble and decided to take shelter beings that his path was impossible to return. He began to starve and had to live off insects for a time. One day, after being the cave for too long, he desperately followed another dangerous path that looked like it would lead to his death. After a long trek he could see what looked like purple off in the distance. Valgimmer followed the path bloody and beaten and slept under an overhang trying to survive off shrubs and trickles of water along the mountain. He made his way down to the plains and saw nothing but purple right before he collapsed.

Later Valgimmer was awoken by a traveling man with a giant hawk. Toriel introduced himself to Valgimmer and shared some provisions with him while asking him about his story. When Toriel heard the story he was surprised and amused. Toriel told Valgimmer that he believed that Valgimmer had some strange tie to nature since the chances of anyone being able to find anything at all to survive were unfathomable in these parts. Toriel explained his views on nature and how one can come to tap into its power to bring balance. Valgimmer listened intently and strangely understood the ideas with a natural phronesis.

After a few weeks of traveling with Toriel, Valgimmer was able to tap into the powers of the land with a reverence and hunger for its power. He began to understand the cycles of life and the interrelationships of all things and began to feel a connection to Kossuth, the god he knew. He saw everything in his life as a test and a fire burned within him for more. Toriel and Valgimmer parted and soon Valgimmer headed back north with a fiery fury in his heart.

Valgimmer decided that he had died and been transformed by the flames of Kossuth. He decided to travel where ever he felt the inner heat lead him. Soon he found himself alon the eastern way where many travelers were coming and going with slaves, wares and exotic goods until he saw a couple of novice wizards harassing a merchant. Valgimmer sat back and watched for a while not caring what happened to the men in particular. He felt the wind stir and it seemed one of the wizards was casting a spell. Soon shrieks and howls were heard from a caravan, and several strange animals began to escape. Someone shouted, “You think you can cheat a wizard of Thay?!” A bright projectile burst forth from the wizard's finger tip and a merchant fell dead. Another wizard began sprinkling some kind of residue upon the dead merchant's body as others fled the scene. Valgimmer watched for a time indifferent to the whole thing, but after a few hours he felt something was wrong, and he saw the merchant rise from the distance. A sick feeling rose in Valgimmer chest and he was infuriated at the sight of necromancy. Valgimmer pulled a wooden stick out that he received from Toriel and clutched it hard as he approached the wizards. The wind was howling and the sand was whipping in the air. As he approached, the wizards looked at Valgimmer quizzically. As he approached them the undead merchant, with a hole in his chest stumbled forward. One wizard spoke, “What have we here, another fool that dares to bother us during a trade?” “Another wizard was trying with all his mind to keep focused on the newly risen undead. Something was stirring that was coming to a head.

It was not long after that there was a confrontation between them. Some how one way or another Valgimmer was able to summon forth a massive number of poisonous snakes using the strange stick he carried. Everyone died before they realized they were being attacked by snakes. Valgimmer had to the beat the unaffected undead with a club before he set it on fire. Upon inspection, Valgimmer saw that there was movement and hissing sounds coming from one of the caravans. He pulled back a leather flap and saw a panther caged and wounded. For some reason, he felt empathetic towards the beast and let it loose. He gave the animal food which was in the dead merchant's possessions and decided to leave, but the panther slowly followed limping. He decided to slow down and if the beast survived following him, he would aid it. The panther did follow and Valgimmer decided to let it travel with him. They became partners.

An untold number of days past and Valgimmer and the panther he named Coal, went south to the port. Valgimmer took a large number of gold coins from the mess he left behind and was anxious to avoid being blamed for the situation. So, he wanted to get as far from Thay as possible, and simply let the people that knew him think he was dead since he was a failure of a wizard anyway. When they came to the port Valgimmer payed for passage to the farthest place the ship was sailing and bought quarters to stay in. To his surprise, they demanded almost all the gold he had, especially, since he asked for a special crate to be brought with him which he had hidden the panther in. They were headed to the Roaring Shore, and soon Valgimmer would see Baldur's Gate.
