THE ORDER OF THE PALLID MASK

Deity: Jergal, the God of Death

"Dogma: Each being has an eternal resting place that is chosen for him or her at the moment of creation. Life is a process of seeking that place and eternal rest. Existence is but a brief aberration in an eternity of death. Power, success, and joy are as transitory as weakness, failure, and misery. Only death is absolute, and then only at its appointed hour. Seek to bring order to the chaos of life, for in death there is finality and a fixedness of state. Be ready for death for it is at hand and uncompromising. Life should be prolonged only when it serves the greater cause of the death of the world. Undeath is not an escape or a reward; it is simply a duty of a chosen few who serve the Lord of the End of Everything."

Called "The Doomscythes of Jergal" or "Companion to the Order of the Pallid Mask" or "Reaper"

"Paladins of Jergal are rare and most of the time are not immediately seen as true Paladins. A lot of this has to do with the aesthetic of the order. Most paladins are armored in the brightest steels and silvers, glowing with the colors of their Lords. Doomscythes, however, have a very distinct Death Motif. Their armor is spiked and dull from crawling through crypts and catacombs. Often their armor is adorned with skulls and bones from the more powerful undead they have defeated."

"Chosen from birth the Doomscythes are raised by the Doomscribes in the larger centers of the faith. These youths are named after aspects of death and doom and their last name is always recorded as Doomscythe. Examples of Doomscythes from history include names such as "Necronus Doomscythe", "Rictus Doomscythe", "Scourgus Doomscythe", and "Funerus Doomscythe". Names are recycled when a Doomscythe dies, the new orphan being named after the last Doomscythe to pass over."

"Doomscythes are called Reapers because they primarily track down and destroy undead. This is their main function within the faith. They fight all evils as this helps to keep their faith "pure" in the face of the chaos and destruction of undead. However, it should be noted that they will fight ANY undead, even those that are apparently Good. Regardless of whether or not the undead in question is morally just, the fact is they have lived beyond their written time and must be sent to their final judgement."

"The symbol of the Doomscythe's status is his Scythe. All Doomscythes train in the use of a scythe but they are not required to use one in battle. Many adopt other weapons such as swords or maces to better handle their undead foes. The added protection of a shield is important also. They will still carry their scythe openly wherever they go so that all know their status and job. Most societies react to the pressence of a Doomscythe with trepidation. They are intimidating figures to behold and often foretell doom to a member of the community. They tend to inexplicably show up to provide another of their functions besides the dispatching of Undead."

"Doomscythes preform "Last Rites" on the recently deceased. Whether on the battlefield, the sick ward, or in a distant and secluded village they are often given visions by their Lord Jergal to attend to the Passing of the Fallen. After battles a Doomscythe will go to friend and foe alike who have died and preform the Last Rites for them to find their way to their chosen afterlife. Despite their intimidating names and appearances the Doomscythes are actual gentle and kind individuals who are very adept at soothing the fevered minds of those close to the Pale. "

"Doomscythes are frightening individuals and experts at wielding their force of pressence. they understand they symbolize death to many but strive to comfort those who fear death and let them know that death is not something to be feared but simply a natural transition to the next world. Death is not the end after all."

"Scriveners of the order spend their days maintaining and extending and listing how sentients under their purview passed away and their destination in the afterlife. The clergy of Jergal are known as the Scriveners of Doom. Within their ranks, the high priest of each temple is known as First Scrivener of Doom, but otherwise the faith eschews titles or ranks. The faith has always been evenly split between clerics, monks, and specialty priests, known as doomscribes."

"Holy Days/Important Ceremonies: Jergal's faithful have little patience or need for holy days or religious ceremonies, viewing them as unnecessary distractions. The one small ritual Jergal's priests are required to perform is called the Sealing. After recording each and every creature's demise, form of death, and destination in the afterlife, Scriveners of Doom are required to sprinkle a light dusting of ash and powdered bone over their inscribed words to blot the ink and mark another step toward the world's end."

The Reapers do not only hunt those that their life has been unnaturally prolonged, but help those fallen whose time has not yet come. Those that still have much to give...

After a long and victorious battle for the Order, at the Vault of the Dead, Dimitris Doomscythe is headed inside Baldurs Gate to buy some much needed supplies. Walking towards the east district Plaza and ignoring any reactions of trepidation comming from passers by - a feeling he got used to after so many years - he enters Maltz's. While waiting for the man to prepare his order, Dimitris has time to reflect on the events that happened just a couple of hours ago.

A meeting was scheduled by the priest of Ilmateri Ameris, between our Order, the Dawnknight Eldarian Al'maire and him. Special note was made about the pressence of our new scrivener, Cara. Brothers Mortimer, Vladimir, our Scrivener Cara and myself entered the Inn at Nashkel. After the odd looks by the Ameris and Eldarian proper introductions were exchanged and the group sat at the table to discuss the matters for this meeting - Common action on the hunting of undead; common action on the giving of last rights; and provision of the names of the dead to the Order of the Pallid Mask.

Initially Ameris and Eldarian were particularly interested in Cara, asking her a lot of questions about her recent change of Faith. Once the questions were answered we talked more about our Order and our main duty - tracking and destroying any undead. Ameris still a bit clouded about what he has seen and heard, suggested a trial. A joint operation againt the undead in the Vault of the Dead. Nothing better for the Reapers of Jergal to seal a deal with a destruction of powerful undead.

Brother Vladimir teleported the group close to the vault and after preparing themselves they ventured inside. Once the Reapers were done all undead in their path were laid to dust impressing Ameris with their prowness and divine might. Words of gratitude were exchanged and promises were given to expedite the matters that were discussed in the meeting.

Dimitris thoughts were interupted by Maltz, telling him the order is prepared. The Reaper paid the full ammount and after thanking the man, he headed back for a much deserved rest.
