The question:
How do you solo level a rogue character?

Without HiPS, it's a pain to get through killing things, since, if your sneak attack fails, you're just very slowly waiting for your daggers to have done enough needle pricks to take someone down. And then you're left hoping it was just one enemy...

In a group it is ofcourse always easier, but I don't always have time for a group, or can't find one.

There are ofcourse also some quests, but a lot of quests involve area's where a puny (low level) rogue can't survive.

So, any advice is welcome

Till you get hips, you treat your rogue as a fighter. Equip him with as much armor you can, shield and sword. Use wands/umd the moment the become available to you and use a lot of consumables ( potion of shield, mage armor, barkskin, healing potions etc). Once you get hips, you can start playing as a rogue.

I'll try that. Do you do that with, or without weeping?
(I recon without, since they'll hear you sneaking while weeping. Then again, they'll find you soon enough after attacking anyway)

Not to mention some greatsword wielding boofhead running in from left field and killing your target because you're still crawling up on it

Unless you go into Assassin, you should be able to get into Shadowdancer at around level 6-7 I think.

What to do until then? RP, do quests.
Alternatively, get potions and scrolls of Summon Creature (are those even for sale?)

But yeah, you treat the Rogue like a Fighter, though you have the element of surprise so you can sneak up on enemies for a sneak attack at least.

Or, you can initiate combat with a ranged weapon and get a couple free hits before the enemy even comes close.

Depending on your other classes, if any, you might even be able to tank and get armor proficiencies. Cleric/Fighter/Paladin etc.

Hmm... Then it might take a while. You might want to get a few levels into Ranger to get a few goodies.
(Free two weapon fighting style, martial weapons and SHIELD proficiency, as well as better HP and BAB)
Or Cleric if you don't mind losing the skill points and sneak attack.

If you want to keep him pure, just show some patience, RP and do quests like I said. Maybe create a second character in the meanwhile and when the quests reset, jump on your Rogue and do them again.
That way it's less risky and you don't have to grind on very easy enemies.

Actually the answer to the OP is "play smart". You can sneak for the first attack, you can run and hide, you can use ranged attack to do damage before you close... If you have one level of Assassin you have a chance to paralyse. It's fun!

Perhaps in weekends then. I'm normally on between 20.00 and 24.00 GMT +1, and weekend... any time
