Assay resist spell needed if...

Hello, I have a sorc that is going to end up being CL 38 (CL35 after practiced spellcaster fix) and also will use the item that grants spell penetration. I will not use feats for higher penetrate.

With that amount of caster levels would I ever need to use assay resist? I will have mord but only as archmage SLA x2 day (to fit other 9th levels in). Would I be needing to use mord/assay resist often vs SR targets/pvp?

Also if I were to get assay resist I would swap out evards black tentacles, so far on my RCR toon I havn't found any use for this spell. I can see it would be useful with a high CL but its a short range and small area and most mobs just walk right through.

thanks

It does not sound nessecery to me. Keep in mind that breaches can do Morden also reduce spell resist for around a minute. You might pick another spell. Perhaps sending or shadow door I don't quit remember the available select ion.

Well if a lvl30 monk who invested totally in Spell Resist (54SR) was to show up, you might need Assay to zero the chances of resist, but otherwise no and I don't think there are alot of those monks around anyway, hehe.

Keep in mind that mordekainen or any of the breaches doesn't lower the SR of drow or monks. The same is true if you face off against monsters with SR hide properties. It's a bug.

Currently your plan is perfect for defeating SR41. If the PSC bug is fixed, you'll have to endure 15% failure. It would be enough to greatly bother me, thus I would pick up assay resistance.

EDIT: Yes, it seems mordekainen lowers SR of monks. It has been fixed, sorry.

I dont trust the spell. used to use it on the frost giants and the damn things still would resist my target spells. i sent in many screen shots of this not working at all and i'm not sure if it's been fixed. At CL 21 using assay should give me a 31 to beat their SR but I still would be rebuffed over and over. Hit them with a mord and you get a 100% success rate. I wouldn't trust this spell untill one of the devs actually goes out and experiments with the spell and fixes it. I'd need one of their words to think about grabbing this spell ever again.

Me and Valefort found the issue. Assay Resistance only lasts for 2 rounds. We've submitted this bug to the development team.

So I hear it as at 38CL (with spell penetration feat item) I wont have any problems not using assay resist. When PCS is nerfed and I drop 3 CL may then have some resists against SR41. On my sorc I have the 4th level breach for -3 SR if I run out of my 2x day mord spell.

Question if I have 35 CL and with spell penetration gives +2 CL (to beat resists) = 37CL vs 41 SR target that I lesser spell breach -3 = 38 SR, whats the resist chance of 37CL vs 38SR?

If one of the monks show up I can use the assay resist scroll, not sure how long they would last.

Caster: 1d20 + Caster Level + Feats + Bonus for Assay Resistance
Defender: Spell Resistance amount + penalties to spell resistance
That is the formula used for SR, if the caster's roll is superior or equal to the defender's SR then the spell goes through.

So in your example :

1d20+35 (CL)+2(spell penetration feat) vs 41 (SR) - 3 (lesser breach)

<=> 1d20+37 - 38
<=> 1d20 - 1 > 0

100% success.

Theres no auto fail or crit effect on spell resist right?

Like 1 being auto fail or 20 auto success.

Caster lvl 35
Huh. Is there a feat/ability (besides Spell Penetration/Greater Spell Penetration) that raises the effective caster lvl here vs SR?

Not feats but classes, Red wizard from vanilla nwn2 and then custom classes : Archmage, Blood mage, Shadow adept. All those classes can increase caster level.
