Background:
Lucy was born in a small village of elves on the outskirts of the King's Forest, far from Suzail, near a caravan town called Eveningstar. Within her first year of life the village was destroyed completely by Drow raiders out of Sschindylryn. Unbeknownst to her, her life was saved by the act of her mother handing her over to a human caravan driver fleeing as the attack began. The driver left her with a small order of monks devoted to Tempus, within a monastery inside Eveningstar's borders, one of the closest things the town had to an orphanage.
Lucy grew and trained alongside the monks, honing her body and mind through combat, but unlike most followers of Tempus the monks specialized in planning, strategy, tactics, emphasizing winning battles in an elegant, and orderly fashion as opposed to a chaotic and furious one. The monks often discussed these tactics in a grand scale, and fancied Lanceboard as a chief way to pass the time when not engaged in physical training.
In 1346 Eveningstar was threatened by a company of bandits, and Lucy, along with several monks of her order. The grandmaster of Lucy's order, a human named Benjen, received a vision of a Lanceboard, and saw the pieces moving on it on their own. He would claim later that he heard the voice of a woman that called herself the Red Knight, and that she showed him the strategy needed to win the battle. Lucy had never been a strong believer of the Gods, and at the time thought Benjen was losing his mind.
Benjen died a year later, of natural causes from old age, and Lucy, having been a member of the order for over a hundred years, was elected to the position of Grandmaster. Afraid of isolation and filled with curiosity of the world outside, she fled the responsibility completely, leaving the monastery with a walking stick and the robes she wore on her back.
With no money or marketable skills, she found herself at a loss, and decided she might gain some perspective by visiting her birth place. It was there in the King's Forest she met Leah, a druid of Silvanus and Guardian of the Green. Leah lived with a small handful of druids and rangers in the woods, and they accepted Lucy into their fold. She learned from them to survive by living off the land, as an animal might. During this time she gained a deep respect for druids, and nature, even swearing vows to Leah that she would continue to live in this "natural" way forever.
In 1348, Leah, Lucy, and the rest of their small group stumbled into a camp of brigands that had taken refuge in their part of the wood, quite by accident. Words were exchanged, though to this day Lucy could not remember what was said, and before she could blink fighting had broken out between their two groups. Taken by surprise, all but Lucy and Leah were slain, the two girls having taken severe injuries. Even encumbered by their wounds, they managed to use their knowledge of the terrain to escape to (relative) safety, though the situation was bleak. Lucy watched helplessly as Leah, her first real friend, laid there and bled to death in front of her eyes, then wept for hours on end. It wasn't long, though, before her despair turned to anger. Lucy patched herself up as best she could, and fell to her knees in prayer. Prayer to to Tempus, to Silvanus, to any God who could hear. In the end it was neither of them that answered. Instead a vision flooded her mind's eye and she could see a Lanceboard in front of her. Her only remaining pieces were a knight, and her king, while her opponent still had a knight, a king, and several pawns. She saw her knight move, as a woman's voice whispered to her softly.
As she prayed, she could feel a sense of vigor fill her, and her injuries began to close on their own. She opened her eyes finally, her anguish replaced with a look of grim determination. Lucy hid in the woods, using the terrain to stay out of sight. She spent a tenday laying traps, watching the bandits' every movement, learning their habits, their weaknesses. She stalked them, and on the eleventh day, using geurilla tactics she led all but their leader to their deaths over the course of two hours. She then returned to their camp, and before their leader could even draw his blade she was upon him, breaking his neck and ending his life with one swift, decisive movement. She would meditate for hours afterwards, and finally enter reverie. When she returned from her memories, she found her hand clutched around a small bishop, carved from ruby, but had no idea where it came from or how she came to possess it. It would be clear to her, however, that the Red Knight that Benjen had spoke of had been the one to answer her prayers, and Lucy felt herself filled with faith.
She set out for Eveningstar again, and it was there that a passing caravan's driver told her of a small war college near Baldur's Gate where the Company of the Red Falcon taught strategy and tactics on a grand scale to aspiring tacticians from the Sword Coast. She decided to head for the city and try to enroll in the school. She signed on as a guard with the caravan, and in 1349 she finally arrived on the Coast. Much to her chagrin she would find the college closed, the Company of the Red Falcon having been hired to go south and assist in the civil war in Tethyr. She ended up taking up refuge in Baldur's Gate within the temple of Tempus. The clerics there would help her understand her new found power, and she would continue to practice her magic through prayer there even in present day, though she would never let her physical training slack, continuing to practice her martial arts with equal fervor. She ended up joining a mercenary company called the Silver Shield, rising to the rank of leadership in what seemed the blink of an eye, and honing her tactics and strategy further by leading the mercenaries in battle. It would be unclear even to Lucy exactly what compelled her to leave the mercenary company, but with growing troubles on the coast and the threat of war looming she left with the determination that she would form a new church, devoted to the Red Knight.
Goals:
1) To hone herself physically, pushing her body to new limits through rigorous physical training
2) To hone herself mentally, becoming a skilled tactician and commander
3) To split worship of the Knight from the Church of Tempus, and form a Church devoted solely to the Lady of Strategy
4) To again put herself in a position to be the commander of troops
5) To lead a true battle on a grand scale, commanding an actual army
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
1) Lucy still receives instruction and guidance from the Red Knight in the forms of visions of pieces moving on a Lanceboard, especially directly before combat situations
2) She wishes to form the official organized church of the Red Knight
3) She gave her ruby bishop to someone on the coast (a player character) she loves dearly to symbolize putting her life in his hands
4) She led the Silver Shield mercenary company along with the brothers Anatox, a group of middling renown on the Coast over the last year, though she resigned that position some months back
5) Some months back she was captured by Drow on the surface and taken to the Underdark where she was tortured. Though she has since taken revenge on her captor and her torturer, this rivalry could potentially still continue into the future
