A trick to exiting the game?
So I selected 'return to my last destination' and found myself in BG at the tavern i'd left last time I played prior to playing for an hour or so and ending up up at the FAI.
This happens quite a bit, as if the server/vault hasn't tracked where my char was when i logged.
I also noticed several times that a bit of exp (not enough to worry about) was also missing. I think.
Is there something I should be doing about saving my characters location that i'm missing?

Resting is the best way to save your location. If you cannot rest, open PC-Tools>Save Character. Thats the next best thing.

You can also type ">save" in the chat. This triggers the same save function as you get through the PC Tools, but there is no message shown for this, however.

I believe that Resting will usually save your precise location, while using the Save Character function only saves char data and not location, leaving your last location at your last rest.

It actually seems a bit random what happens when you save through either the chat or the PC Tools. Sometimes your location is saved, sometimes it isn't.
What annoys me the most about last location is that you can't see where your last location is, when you talk to Mystra in the Nexus. If the last location isn't where you thought it'd be, or where you wanted it to be (save didn't work), then you might want not want to use that option.

I hit rest before I log every single time, and even when I don't actually rest, it usually saves.

Resting and being booted (like at a reset, for instance), saves your location. The Save Character button does not.

Especially if it's halfway across the server and you could have used Home Location or something similar.

Yep. Fighter-type character RP'ing and adventuring with friends in the Forest of Wyrms, reset coming up, nowhere to rest and can't make it to safe zone in time, hit the Save button. Log in after reset, return to last location, you're now in Beregost, alone, your friends are back in the forest because they rested for spells earlier. RP is delayed. Would have been easier to go to Soubar from the Nexus and take the caravan.Hoihe wrote:mireigi wrote:It actually seems a bit random what happens when you save through either the chat or the PC Tools. Let the server boot you instead of logging out before a reset. Then you'll be where you were when the server reset.

Rest before reset. Save button and booting are unreliable.
I've been waking up in random places till level 15 with my first char because of that, before I heard of the "rest" thing. Waking up in gibberling cave alone at level 5 (while having rusty short sword equipped) is very amusing. So is waking up in front of orc cave at level 10.
