Clarification of Candlekeep's Laws

So I had a run in the other day in which I cam out of Candlekeep wearing a mask, no biggie as I am a faction member, right? Well, someone disagreed and the DM asked me to take it off, so we retconned it a bit and went from there.
That isn't the issue, the issue is that everything I can find, including the sign next to the gate and this post (
http://www.bgtscc.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5585) says that "visitors" shall not be allowed to cover their faces. Seeing as the acolytes, guards, and avowed have quarters within Candlekeep they are not, by definition, visitors.
It also makes sense that faction members would have some special dispensations, you wuold expect guards to be seen practicing and sparring and therefore brandishing weapons, that sort of thing.
So can we either have the rules changed to say what they mean, or enforce them as written? It seems a bit confusing otherwise.

How do the guards know Teo is Teo and not someone of similar build and height in disguise? My guess is that people are familiar with other people they live and work with and see regularly. You do not have to see the entire face of someone you know in order to recognize them or their voice. In addition, I feel like you have made the assumption that I always wear a mask in Candlekeep, I don't. In addition, how easy is it to simply flash the guards your face and move on without anyone else noticing?
Let's also remember I said I came OUT of wearing a mask, did the guards inside watch me put it on and then forget who I was as soon as my face was covered? Come on...

// It's part of lore, server rules for candlekeep, and guild rules. Teo had has faced burned horribly by hellfire and even he as guide does take his mask of momentarily to enter candlekeep. Teo has a high ranking position within candlekeep, so a singular exception was made based on his horrible disfigurement. It isn't just candlekeep it's anywhere with guards that don't allow masked individuals to enter or wear a mask on grounds. Doing so is metaing the NPCs. //
//Reiterating that Teo is guide, the highest PC rank available in candlekeep and one and only one exception is made. In the future I'd suggest none considering the headaches and people claiming unfairness. Don't wear a mask on the grounds of candlekeep, it's against the rules and considering metagamming the NPCs.//

It is NOT metagaming if you are following the rules on the sign and the ones on the forums. That's what I'm saying, update those to say what is actually intended, instead of expecting people to just know and then having to waste a DMs time in game.

Tbh any guild should have some sort of insignia, emblem, tattoo, mark, or other indication that let others, or at least faction members, recognize their allegiance. Something that can be shown to guards / members to verify that you are a member. Since most guild halls already have guild tokens that serve as a key to restricted areas, such could be used for identification.
As long as you can prove, through a token item, that you are a member, no faction you belong to should have any problems with you wearing a facemask and/or disguise when trying to enter or leave.

However way you look at it, it's pretty terrible for an avowed to disguise himself inside Candlekeep...

Inside, yes. But the avowed may be at risk while outside Candlekeep, or may simply not want anyone to know who he/she is, except the other members of Candlekeep.
Isn't it reasonable that such a character would remain disguised even inside Candlekeep, if in the company of non-members?

I'm sure the guards would be happy to have a legit excuse to slay Teo.

As I told you before, Teo is permitted based on a special condition to wear the mask and operate within Candlekeep by Ulraunt. Nobody else is permitted.

Yes Theo, I know. I'm not trying to say I have a problem with having to not wear a mask. You guys seem to be missing the point I am apparently failing to make. Let's imagine another new player comes along (or someone returning after a long hiatus as I did) and reads the rules about Candlekeep, and interprets them (as I did) how they are written. Then this topic comes up again and blah blah blah.
Isn't it easier just to update that sign and the forum post to actually say what is meant? Cause we can argue till we are blue in the face about whether the rules make sense, but at the end of the day that doesn't matter, because players don't make the rules. What DOES matter (at least in my opinion) is if you are enforcing a rule differently than it is presented to the player base.

This may be something you should try to get pushed by the guild itself by RPing it.
