I keep getting killed

I made an air genasi wizard. I've been trying to get into the game, but I keep dying. I can't find anybody to team up with and I can't win any fights. How do I level up if I can't kill anything?

Wizards are pretty tough early on for someone new here. Best thing is to do all the possible quests around town, then make sure you have the expeditious retreat spell and do the Maltz quest and while in Beregost fit in Radger quest, and Hunter's Supplies in Nashkel (and set one as your home location to make Maltz/Hunter easier next week).
Now you need to do the graveyard just outside BG. All you need for this is spells/scrolls to get your AC up and some heal kits for when that doesn't work. Once you have Heroism it will get easier.

Summon creature and crossbow. That's the safest.

^^ Buy a bunch of Summon Monster III scrolls from the magic store in Baldur's Gate but first do as many of the starter quests as you can around the city (there are two in the eastern farmlands and a few in the docks, two in the palace district). The quests alone will get you lvl 2 and close to 3.

Don't underestimate early level AoE spells. Once you learn the lay out and NPC limitations, you'll know what spells work best and how to capitalize on it.
My advice is to keep moving and gather as large of a group of NPCs as possible. Ghostly Visage will help with an early 5 DR in case you do get hit. Expeditious Retreat works wonders for keeping distance. Once you've gathered them all up, try and hit them all with your AoE spells. (Fireburst, etc)
When you hit level 7 and get access to Stoneskin, you'll be living mostly in the Goblin Mines for a few levels. I used to run through the entire place and gather a group of 10-15 Goblins and do a combination of Fireburst's, Fireballs, Vitriolic spheres, Grease to slow them down and group them up, Wall of Fire and run around it in a circle so you can watch the Goblins run into it repeatedly.
If you ever find that you'll get XP much faster staying in a slightly lower level area and just nuking them all at once.

Consumables.
If the crossbow + summons tactic isn't enough... Go for Mage Armor scrolls, Shield potions etc. I tend to use a crossbow and then a mace in close range on mages at the early levels. Too few spellslots to really do anything with them.

You have chosen one of the hardest ways to get started on the server. Wizard with an ECL 1 race. It is no surprise you are having a hard time. I recommend you roll a dwarven fighter. go 16 con, 16 str, 12 dex and whatever else you want with the other stats.
Just start out with fighter. Play him to about 10th level or so until you learn the server a little better. When you know the places, things will get much easier.
If you are set on playing an air gensai wizard, then the advice already given is the best. It's gonna be hard and slow though.

Know your spellbook.
GHOSTLY VISAGE!!! (AC is great bit 20s happen and you won't have the HP to survive a crit yet)
Sleep (under utilized spell that KOs groups of enemies for coup de grace)
Grease/web/cloud of bewilderment (combine with ranged weapon. Learn what saves are weakest on what you're fighting and plan accordingly)
Shield (+4 AC and immunity to magic missile for doing your Maltz-beregost quest through goblin territory)

My first toon here was a wizard too. It was a really tough battle through those first few levels. I got help where I could find it, used summons and ghostly visage like people have suggested, and eventually got though. Once you get to 5th level things are much easier. The dire would eats kobolds for breakfast and you have spells for buffing it and yourself. Stick with it and do the quests as much as you can. You'll get there.

I find it easier to catch the boat south of Candlekeep and just leg it.

You can also buy Polymorph Self and use trollshape when your alone, it' very effective with Mage armor, ghostly visage and shield. You get regeneration and decent strength for melee, scrolls last for quite awhile, about 7 minutes I think, maybe more.

Now try making a mage with 6 con and illusion as the prohibited school.
I'm level 17 now for the record. So scary when I could get 2 shotted by a farmlands wolf!

Ping me if your ripping your hair out.
In the baldurs gate east district.
Go into Maltz shop and buy the cloak that gives you +5 hit points.
Maybe you can take an extra hit after getting that.
Then stick to the farmlands NORTH.
It has the wolves.
And the bandit cave which you can get to from farmlands NORTH.
Otherwise.. ye, what everyone else said on this thread.

We also reward players for writing biographies of their characters. I've always found that it helps me in the process of creating a character. While there is no specific DM who oversees these biographies, they are sometimes looked through if a player asks a DM online at the time. Being patient and reading the server rules can make the process smoother.
Biography Guidelines
It's 2,000xp that you don't have to kill wolves for.
