Background:

In his earliest memories as a child he remembered only darkness, suffering, and hunger. As an orphaned beggar child on the streets of Thay, he survived on what little charity existed in others.

However, he was always plagued or perhaps gifted, with visions. Through the darkness, he would receive glimpses of an angelic presence. Occasionally it would follow those passing through the market where the child would beg for his daily bread. He would speak of it at times. The market's patrons would usually ignore him, after a short time they took notice. Those the child spoke of, would soon find their deaths. Naturally, the commoners did not take well to his soothsaying. They were quick to condemn him as cursed, or possessed. The impoverished child was branded a Doomsayer, and further shunned within his society.

One day, following the funeral of one recently marked by the child's prophecies, a mob gathered around the boy. They cursed his name and his soothsaying, saying he was possessed, or causing the deaths he foretold.

It was at this time that a scrivener of Jergal was heading to the temple to take the names of the deceased. He saw the fervent mob, and inquired as to what inflamed them so. Learning of the boy, he saw not a curse, but a blessing. Claiming the child a favored of Jergal, he saved him from the angry mob and offered sanctuary among the Scrivener priests.

For years the child aided the scriveners. He would receive Omens of Peril, which aided the scriveners out to conduct their duty and collect the names of the dead. He did little else, until the day several Reapers of the Order of the Pallid Mask arrived. The order of Undead Hunters, hearing of the soothsayer child, favored of Jergal. They sought his visions in tracking a coven of vampires which had been moving through the land. In aiding the undead hunters, it became clear that the visions granted the now young man were good for more than merely tracking death, but undeath as well.

The boy traveled with the undead hunters, together he located and they destroyed the undead killers one by one. Finally, a vision led them to the den where the remaining vampires had gathered. The order ventured forth into an abandoned crypt, with one of the Order staying behind to protect the boy. But it was a trap. The vampires barricaded the crypts entrance, and fell upon the boy and his protector.

The protector fought valiantly in defense of the young seer, felling several of the ambushing vampires. But there were to many. They set themselves upon the now seemingly defenseless boy, who picked up the scythe dropped by his protector to now defend himself. As though his hand were guided by fate, the young man lashed out and decapitated the first vampire swiftly. Two remained, and scrambled to kill the seer quickly, but he managed to keep them at bay with the weapon, as though he could anticipate their movements, and see their intentions clearly.

Just as the vampires managed to disarm him and lunged for the killing blow, the Doomscythes of the Order of the Pallid mask looked on helplessly as a great light fell from above, and an angelic presence descended. The presence felled one of the stunned vampires with a single blow. The other sought to run, but the presence lunged after him and ended him swiftly. The presence then turned for the fallen protector. "Wait!" the young man cried. "He died trying to save me! Take me instead!" The other Paladins, now free from their entrapment looked on as the presence turned to the young man and said "all must confront their fate at the appointed hour." The young man would never question the hand of fate again. The angelic presence then embraced the fallen Reaper, and vanished, leaving only mortal remains.

The Doomscythes stood over their fallen brother, and looked to the young seer, now holding the protectors scythe. One turned to the young man and said, "this coven is broken, but there are more to be found. If you will continue to aid us, we will train you in the use of the weapon you now hold, and our ways?" The young man nodded slowly. The Reaper continued, "Mortimer fell bravely and honorably in your defense and in service to the Ancient One. You will take up his arms, and his duty, and be henceforth known as Mortimer Doomscythe, Reaper of the Pitiless One."

Goals: Tending his duties. Destroying undead. Serving Jergal.

Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
Undead hunting. Jergalite visions, Soothsaying Plots.

I would be happy to use his 'seer' background to help start/advance plots at DM discretion.

((FYI, all of the abilities are on his character sheet. Mortimers soothsaying is explained through access to several divine divination spells including omen of peril, detect undead, augury, blind sight and true sight... and I would like access to any additional divination PnP abilities in events at the discretion of the DM's. He can also cast gate to summon an angel ( the angelic presence))).
