Baldur's Gate : The Sword Coast Chronicles : NWN2 Persistent World

So a year ago some idiot conspiracy nut said that the world was going to end sometime in early September. Whether by asteroid, alien attack, or black hole, we were all supposed to be dead now. Oh and in addition to this the rapture was supposed to have occurred just before the end as well. Well we are still here and the world shows no sign of ending any time soon, nor does any divine intervention seem forth coming. Guess its time to break out the beer and party like its 1999... which was also supposed to have been the end but was not. Ironic yes?

Well, someone is always predicting the end, perhaps so they can have a very short celebration of "I told you so" ?

Not sure that's irony though...Irony would be something more like you posted this, then the world ends.

For me, every time I hear about one of these doomsday events, I really look forward to them. The when nothing happens, I am sad. When is the next one?

Actually according to one of the new scientific theories the entire universe could end at any time with no warning. Its something called a Vacuum Metastability Event... basically the forces which govern the universe vanish and are replaced with entirely new ones. All the laws of physics, all the processes which take place in our universe, the very forces which bind the universe together shift in a fraction of a nano second into completely new forms.

This means that everything which was based on those old systems becomes impossible and is destroyed during the transition Nothing of our old universe would remain and the new one would be completely alien. If the new universe has the right properties it may be that life in any form becomes impossible. Sceintists say this might happen at any time with no warning. There is a silver lining though... if it does happen it will be so fast that no one will feel it or even be aware of it. One minute you will exist and then poof... annihilation. Sounds wonderful does it not.

I worry about those prophecies and the idea of the world ending as much as I worry about having a huge piano falling on my head tomorrow as I walk down the street.

BTW, "destroying the Earth" would require something on the order of the Sun changing into a Red Giant first incinerating then engulfing the inner planets. So, in maybe 5-billion years, there actually will be an "end of the world" event.

In the meantime, horde that ammo and pick up that pistol laying in the street. No telling when you might need it... or get eaten.

I'd say that the problem with these kind of people is too much free time and not knowing what in the nine hells do with it. Maybe they shoul spend more time in a place with fresh air, a remote place far far away...
