Anguis, mutilated monk of Ilmater
Posted: Sat Sep 26, 2015 6:04 pm
First Name: Anguis
Last Name: unknown
Appearance:
Above average height, very lean but muscular. His head is shaven. He would probably once have been regarded as handsome. However, his countenance is now marred by old and new scars that criss-cross all of his visible skin. His eyes and slightly pointed ears suggest a not entirely human lineage. He is dressed in simple clothing and carries no visible weapons.
Race: Aasimar
Age: 35
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 140 lbs
Eyes: Golden/brown
Hair: Shaven head
Facial Hair Style: None
Personality Profile:
Slow to anger and temperate in all things, Anguis is apparently the epitome of calmness and serenity unless called into action to defend the weak and needy. Given his background (see below) he is remarkably free from bitterness and thoughts of revenge. His words are few and when he does speak he often ponders a little before deciding what to say. He does not outwardly show fear and while far from reckless he will not shy away from a challenge or opportunity to better his 'training'. Some might say he seeks out training too eagerly, seemingly intent on testing his mettle against all forms of damage, poison, pain and discomfort. He would simply smile and say it was the pain that made him who he is, though he is vehement that no others should suffer the way he has. His meditations and experiences have heightened his awareness (spot, listen, sense motive).
General Health: Immune to disease
Deity: Ilmater
Initial Alignment: Lawful Good
Profession: Pilgrim monk, helping those in need, seeking to challenge himself and learn to achieve enlightenment through control of his physical form and his mind.
Base Class & Proposed Development:
A lump of purest monk, high WIS
Habits/Hobbies:
He meditates often to calm his mind and find his focus. With so many wounds on his body is it possible that some are self-inflicted...?
He is a vegetarian and teetotal.
Languages: Common, elven, dwarven
Weapon of Choice: Unarmed
Background:
Whilst undergoing his initial training as an initiate monk and not even sure of his faith, he was captured by Loviatarans and incarcerated in the House of Pain in Undermountain. They hated him for both his faith and his race, and decided to keep him as a 'pet' to experiment on rather than kill him. At first and as an inexperienced monk he delighted his enemies by reacting to the pain and begging for mercy. However, over time his reactions lessened, and his evil tormentors started to tire of their games. Eventually they almost forgot about him completely, other than a passing interest by some scholars as to the impact of long-term torture on an individual. The final straw was when he greeted his enemies with a smile and said he was looking forward to their 'session' together. Before they could decide what to do with him, he took advantage of the now lax security around him, knocked out his captors and escaped.
For all the years of his torture Anguis had been honing his responses to the pain, and training hard in his cell. He vowed to himself that some good would come out of this hell, and that this would come about once he finally escaped. However, he would admit to himself that he waited a little longer than he needed to. The daily ritual of pain had become so familiar.
Now he is out in the world with an unshakable faith in Ilmater, who he believes showed him how to distance himself from the pain (In truth he has come to like the pain and craves it but he will not openly admit this). He has inhuman willpower coupled with an extremely even tempered demeanour. However, when set to a task to aid the weak or needy, he will not be turned from that path (somewhat obsessive).
Goals:
(i) To perfect himself in mind and body so that he may better serve Ilmater in this world, until his last breath.
(ii) To help the weak and needy regardless of their reasons for being in such a situation
(iii) (the controversial impossible one) To reconcile Ilmater and Loviatar and show Loviatarans (whom he pities) the error of their ways
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
(a) Anything related to the Ilmater - Loviatar axis
(b) Anything around helping the weak/disadvantaged etc.
(c) A case study for how to resist pain/torture. Most of his lore would be related to that
(d) Religious heresy? Some Ilmaterians might find his ideas bordering on Loviataran.
(e) Anything related to his celestial heritage
OOC notes - RCR after deleting my previous Gray Orc monk Constantine. Anguis is latin for snake.
