Instadeath

so I'm in the area between the gibberling caves and the hilltop ruins. at full health, kill a bat, take a step forward and boom. Instantly dead from full health. It just says "Someone killed x person" and I'm fugued.
Has anyone ever had this happen before? There shouldn't be anything down there that could do that. does anything ever do that? I would assume you at least live long enough to see if it was a trap or someone breaking the rules in the combat log. but there was absolutely nothing.
