I played it a bit, haven't really had time lately to sit down and commit to it. But I really really liked what I saw.

I played it, and I loved it.

Played for 1hour and almost 30minutes before I got involved in my first actual fight in the game - and that one was three against one, in my favour ^.^. Every other encounter I managed to turn to my advantage, or in a few other cases duck out of it.

It's brilliant. I fear I'm going to lose more than a few hours to that game!

Pre-ordered it in 2010 I think?

Still have yet to try it.

Afraid I might have grown out of the genre by now though.

I finished a playthrough as the assassin class. The game just seemed unfinished to me. As if the developers wanted to do so much more but couldn't, for whatever reason (granted, they had about 10 years to do that but moving on). This is evidenced by the lack of dialogue options and shallow class-specific questline, at least for assassins. I especially disliked how the story 'flows' in the game. When you leave certain areas, you basically forfeit your chance to complete certain quests - with no warning whatsoever. Additionally, you are offered little incentive to re-visit already discovered areas. Also, it tends to crash a lot.

On the flipside; I tremendously enjoyed the post-apocalyptic steampunk setting. God, am I sucker for these kinda settings. I also liked how you discover tidbits about the empire and the great war from stories (a lot of them fictional) offered by NPCs you meet throughout the game. The last, 'grand' revelation however, leaves much to be desired IMO. I'll withhold my judgement about that though, since I suspect different classes experience different endings. The narrative is pretty top-notch and there's quite a few characters that stand out. The combat is also rather enjoyable, with only a few kinks needing ironing out.

Another 'minor' complaint is that the game offers you the illusion of choice when there's clearly cookie cutter builds for certain classes. To all you prospective assassins out there, don't bother investing in more than one weapon unless they are synergistic (game mechanic) with eachother and pump a lot of dodge&critical strike !

Despite the pessimism in my post, I still believe that it's a solid RPG and well worth trying out. Even with its limitations, I don't think that there's a current day RPG that can match its depth. I'll definitely be replaying as Loremaster to investigate all these ancient machines my assassin couldn't make work because of his pitiful lore/craft.

Alright, I may have been a bit hasty in my judgement. I've been rediscovering the game through the various classes and quests and I can say that having high civic skills is far more rewarding than being a beatstick. Piecing together the scraps of ancient lore by spelunking and talking to various NPCs has been a blast. What the game really tries to do is narrate a story to the player. And it's damn good at it.
