Background:
Dorengar was born, like many others, a bastard in the infamous pirate isles in the Sea of Fallen Stars. More precisely in the Dragonisle, largest of the many islands and major pirate haven. He never knew who his real mother or father and in truth he doesn't care to find out. Unknown to all than his biological mother are the things that she did to get his infant son out of the isles to the port city of Teziir on the shores of Dragon Coast. She wanted a better life for his son than what would await him in the isles. She left him on the steps of Ilmatarian orphanage in the city and left herself. The Ilmatarians raised young Dorengar, a name given by the clergy, as best as they could. The orphanage was crowded and overpopulated. The priests couldn't keep track of all the children under their care. As Dorengar grew up he would often leave with or without permission and explore the port city himself. He was exposed to the sinister characteristic of a port located in Dragon Coast. Cultist, thieves, dark mages and all manner of shady characters operated among Zealots, goodly priests and other benevolent. Allthough not so openly than in other ports of the Coast, like Westgate. The ruling merchant council made sure of it. Dorengar quickly learned to mind his own business and turn a blind eye if needed. A thing which kept him alive thoughout his years on the Dragon Coast.
Years of his youth flowed past until he was old enough in his early teens to leave the orphanage permanently. He had watched all manner of people all his life and wanted to make his own way in the world. Trouble was he had nothing. No gold, no relatives, no famous name. He survived by stealing his food for awhile and often convincing folks to help him, or distract them while he stole something, which he became quite good at. This worked for him, but he was doomed to be caught eventually. He was better in talking than stealing. That time came when he was obtaining dinner from a more influencal merchant. He had never tried to steal from traders, he knew it was risky. Little did he know the merchant had enough influence with one of the thieves guild in the city and Dorengar was caught by one of their sentries set to watch the market. He was being dragged to the shadows for his cruel punishment, usually this ment loosing some body part, when a man spoke up and stopped them. He was a large man clad in heavy armor and carrying several weapons with him, clearly a fighter of some kind.
-"That boy is under my care. Allow me to repay you any trouble he caused so he'll be spared."
The rather imposing man spoke with confidence in Dorengars behalf and to his suprised his capturers set him free. After trading few words with the pair and a tinkling purse, the fighter walked up to Dorengar, who had been watching from a safe distance.
-"You never steal from these men again you hear?"
The imposing figure grunted. Young Dorengar nodded in shame avoiding the penetrating gaze of the man.
-"You own me a lot now boy. Come along then. Lets meet up with the rest of the group and have a talk. You can be useful to us."
After hasty consideration between escaping and doing what this man told, Dorengar decided to do as ordered. The pair made their way to one of the taverns of the city. There waited a small group of many talents led by the man that Dorengar was following. The group was called Black Dragon Raiders and it was led by Reigor Thunderstrike, reknowned for his skill in battle. Black Dragon Raiders did all sorts of mercenary work around the Dragon Coast, focusing on Westgate and Teziir. That day young Dorengar became their runner and errand boy.
Years rolled past and Dorengar grew to a strong fighting man. He did excellent job at his chores as a teen and Reigor notices this. He started to train Dorengar how to fight. He learned quickly and became a vital member of the group. Reigar always pointed out with a rumbling laughter that Dorengar was the best thing he had ever bought and the rest of the crew always agreed. Dorengar became acustomed to a life of a mercenary and he liked it. Work was always plenty on the shores of Dragonmere as long as you did not ask too many questions, stepped on someones toes stronger than you or get involved in something bigger than yourself. Life was good and plenty, but it was not ment to last. One fatal contract would soon be the end of The Raiders.
Reigar accepted a cotract to storm one remote warehouse and obtain certain item stored there. Warehouses are always heavily fortified on the coast and owned by powerful individuals, groups or factions, so he was very skeptic at first and was ready to refuse the offer. However when he heard the pay amount, it was an offer he could not refuse. He was getting old and this gold, which a considerable amount was paid in advance, would be enough to retire the whole gang to a plentiful lazy life. He gladly accpeted, blinded by greed and ignoring the simple rules of the coast vital in order to stay alive. After details were worked out with the client he went straight to his crew and was able to convince them with suprising ease, including Dorengar. By now he and the others adored Reigar and was ready for anythig he asked. Black Dragon Raiders would storm the warehouse the next night and find themselves overwhelmed and captured. The warehouse was owned an operated by most powerful thieve's guild in Teziir, called Astorians. After a short battle where they lost half their crew, they surrendered. Their faith was death and this was all too obvious to everyone of them. Dorengar and the rest would be separeted and taken prisoner. Dorengar was tortured by members of the thieves guild. They wanted to break him and get information about the person who had hired them for this raid. Obviously Dorengar had little answers and it was during this torture that he lost his left eye. It was dug out with a spoon.
After day or so the thieves figured out Dorengar had nothing to tell them. He was to be dragged to the bushes, dealth with and buried in a unmarked grave with as little time wastes as possible. Two men came to Dorengars cell and grabbed him. They untied his legs and started leading him towards his cruel end. By now Dorengar had figured out what was happening and he was certain he wouldn't go out this. When they reached a more quiet spot on their way Dorengar made his move. Mustering all his remaining strenght he struggled free from the thiefs grip, who was taken by complete suprise. Both of them had thought Dorengar was too weak by now. Dorengar managed to strike and knock out the first thief and lunge at the other one still unaware of this. He strangled him with his tied hands. After breaking loose from his ties Dorengar made sure no one saw them. Lucky for him it was early morning, so most thieves were asleep. Before sneaking out of the warehouse he had passed a guarded room. The guard was asleep and snores loudly, so Dorengar managed to get pass him undetected. He had tried to look for the remains of his crew, but had not found anyone. By now he was sure he was the last one alive, so he just couldn't leave with empty hands. He found a large bag of gold and a strange and complex key. He grabbed them both and sneaked out.
He managed to make his way back to Teziir. He couldn't stay in the city. Dorengar spent gold on some gear and a place in a trade caravan west. After long journey with several different caravans, to cover his trail, he found himself in front of Baldur's Gate.
Goals:
-Avoid retaliation from his previous capturers and to stay alive.
-Continue his profession and make some gold with it.
-Find out what the key is for, if it is possible at all.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts:
-Unknown to him some of Black Dragon Raiders managed to escape and has fled the Coast aswell.
-The complex key he stole is the only way to open a very complex lock of a adamantine stongbox still in posession of his capturers.
-He was smart and able enough to use alias while he was captive of Astorians. He said his name was Dorik.
