Quick Rune of Flame Questions

What is the range of this (do you have to go and physically place it or does it have a range?).
Also does it hit allies (fiery burst doesn't but this is different?).

All the runes have range of about 'medium' (30ft or so?). So yes you don't need to be in melee range.
Moreover, they have no splash damage to allies. So yes you can hurl them from range at your enemies and leave your allies/summons unharmed!
Just keep in mind they have a 30 sec cooldown so you cant just spam one each round or whatever.

Thanks for the useful info.
Already have fiery burst but I really want to take everything fire-related I can for him to make him a 'fire mage'. I guess mechanically this is marginal if you already have fiery burst, except that it has a slightly larger area and does a bit more damage so you can hit an enemy harder with the first hit?
Now the only issue is I've run out of feat slots to take fiery feats
